Sonic Milestones
« on: October 15, 2005, 03:54:26 pm »
This is a rejuvenation of a topic I posted last year.  It's a starting list of what each Sonic game contributed to the overall Sonic universe.  Please feel free to add or change anything in this topic by replying; I will be updating this frequently.

This topic is currently at version 8 (updated Sonic CD and Sonic R).  Please feel free to correct my mistakes or add your own contributions.

Sonic 1 –
First game in Sonic series
Introduced most basic concepts within a Sonic game

Sonic 2 –
Introduced:
  • Tails
  • Metal Sonic (this version doesn't have an official name)
  • Super Sonic
  • Spin dash
  • Ring collection special stages
  • “Chase view” special stages
  • 3rd-person view (in special stages)
  • 2-Player control
  • Split Screen
Sonic 3 –
Introduced:
  • Knuckles
  • Tails’ flying ability
  • Elemental Shields
  • Act 1 bosses
  • Varied special stages
  • Specific racing stages
  • Cutscenes
  • Game paths specific to each character
Sonic and Knuckles –
Introduced:
  • Knuckles as a playable character
  • EggRobo
  • Super Emeralds
  • Master Emerald
  • Super Knuckles/Tails
  • Hyper Sonic/Knuckles
  • Additional level for obtaining all of emeralds
  • Game “patches” which could be added to Sonic 2-3 to make Knuckles playable
Sonic CD -
Introduced:
  • The Metal Sonic
  • Amy Rose as a non-playable character
  • Music with lyrics
  • Time Attack mode
  • Centisecond timing
  • Alliterative stage naming
  • Eggman gets dialogue (though he doesn't say much)
  • First game to be released on PC
Sonic 3D Blast -
Introduced:
  • 2 1/2-D gaming
  • Only known game with Sonic treasure hunting levels
Sonic R -
Introduced:
  • Amy Rose as a playable character (albeit in a car)
  • Eggman as a playable character
  • First racing game
  • Tails Doll and Cyber Knuckles (which were quickly scratched)
  • First Sonic game to be released on more than one system almost simultaneously (Sonic CD's PC version came out a year after its SCD release)
Knuckles Chaotix -
Introduced:
  • First game on 32X
  • Chaotix characters (Espio, Vector and Charmy)
  • First game which did not have Sonic as protagonist
  • First game with two simulatneously controllable characters (NOT counting Sonic-Tails in the Genesis games)
  • Only game known where you can get negative rings (I've done it).
Sonic Advance -
Introduced:
  • Airdash
  • First game on GBA
Sonic Advance 2 -
Introduced:
  • Tricks
  • "Automatic" springs (where you just have to touch spring to activate as opposed to having to jump on it)
  • Cream and Cheese
  • Specific "boss attack" levels to each zone (as opposed to Act 3's)
Sonic Advance 3 -
Introduced:
  • Tag-up characters
  • First tag-ups with Sonic, Tails, Cream and Amy
  • Finding Chao in world maps :o
  • First sidescroller to have a goal ring
Sonic Battle -
Introduced:
  • Emerl
  • First 2D Sonic fighting game, first fighter in North America
Sonic Fighters
Introduced:
  • First fighter
  • Amy in a 3D scenario
Sonic Adventure -
Introduced:
  • Homing attack
  • Light attack
  • Eventual Light dash
  • E-102
  • Big the Cat (should I even count him?)
  • Fishing stages onos!
  • Treasure hunting with Knuckles
  • First-ever levels where you WANT a high time (E-102's)
  • Cutscenes containing dialogue
  • Chao
  • Multiple missions within same level
  • First typical Sonic game without acts (not counting racers, Fighters etc.)
  • Emblems
  • Teleporting platforms (if you've played the game you'll know what I mean
Sonic Adventure 2 -
Introduced:
  • Shadow
  • Rouge
  • Instant Light dash/air dash
  • Updated Chao training
  • First main character to get killed off after one game (Shadow; this is debatable, since he was brought back by popular demand, but he was meant to be killed originally)
Sonic Heroes -
Introduced:
  • Three-person tag-up
  • Cream and Cheese in a 3D scenario (they had only been in 2D games before)
  • Vector, Charmy and Espio in a 3D scenario
  • First multi-player use of Shadow's Chaos Control
Shadow the Hedgehog -
Introduced:
  • Weapons for running characters (as opposed to machines)
  • Light side/dark side choices (gameplay in which actions taken by the player determine if their character is good, evil, or somewhere in between).
I will be updating this as often as I can.

Me: Do you find it odd that CF's top two loves rank last in his Bouncy rankings? x_x
mike89: yes. yes i do.
mike89: but then i find CF odd.
Me: so do I.

The odds of meeting a TSCer randomly on the street, at any given time anywhere in the world, is approximately 15,785,611 to 1 ... and growing.

Fixed the stupid mistakes and inserted Sonic CD.
If you don't want people to treat you like you're stupid, then your best defence is to not be stupid.

I already have Tails flying, and the mid-air effects are part of shields that were already in Sonic 3 (e.g. Fire Shields).

-Sonic Adventure:
1. Homing Attack
2. Light Dash
3. Horrible treasure hunting stages.
4. Even worse fishing stages.
5. Gamma and Big as playable characters.
-Sonic Adventure 2:
1. Shadow and Rouge.
2. Egg Man as a playable character (if you ignore Sonic R).
Ever know what its like to get pwned by a book? Sonic certainly does.

And RPG, I'm pretty sure Knux Chaotix had tag-ups well before SA3.

SA2 didn't introduce the Light Dash; it simply reduced the wait time from SA1's 4 or 2 seconds to 0.

Chaotix didn't have "tag actions", just a slingshot speed boost (using the Hold button) that works the same for all character combinations.  It does predate Shadow the Hedgehog by a considerable amount as the first game in the series without Sonic as protagonist.

-Shadow the Hedgehog
1. Light side/dark side gameplay. I'm refering to gameplay in which actions taken by the player determine if their character is good, evil, or somewhere in between.
-Sonic Heroes:
1. First in game (not multiplayer) use of Shadow's Chaos Control.
-Sonic Battle:
1. Emerl.
2. First Sonic fighting game to make it to American home consoles. The fact that its poorly balanced is another matter.
Ever know what its like to get pwned by a book? Sonic certainly does.

Sonic R is NOT the first of the series for PC.  I don't have a known release date for it, but the data files for that game show up as modified 1998/10/04, while I remember getting a promotional item in the mail whereby I could (and did) order Sonic CD's PC version right after it came out--in 1995.

According to the GHZ, Sonic CD was released for MegaCD on 11/19/93 and PC on 8/26/96.

I definitely got my mail-in offer in 1995, not 1996.  The help file for the game (under History of the Sonic Games) even includes the following in its Sonic CD entry: "This game was rewritten for the PC in 1995; that's what you're playing now!"

Since the offer was right as the game came out, that disc contains the OEM version of the game which I later learned used 16-bit executables, and wouldn't work on Windows XP even with the patch.  The more common version (the one you used to be able to buy in stores) might be where the 1996 release date comes from.

Introduced:

That had already appeared in Sonic Chaos, with a different control system.
