A followup on Unleashed
« on: October 15, 2008, 02:59:19 pm »
Awhile ago I wrote about some severe framerate troubles with Unleashed and their potential to sink the game. Well, we're within a month of release now, which means the game is pretty much in its final form, and the verdict is in:

"The PlayStation 3 version's appalling framerate [is] a shame, because the Xbox 360 version boasts a brisk framerate that compliments the game's arresting and vivid graphics"

So, 360 Sonic fans can break out the champagne, and PS3 owners have yet another reason to regret their purchase.

Meanwhile, Douglas and genus's merry parade staggers onward, with the Top Ten Catchphrases next to come.

update: Shadow Jacky's put comparison videos later in the topic if you want to check it out for yourself.

This game is also coming out on the wii. Can somebody please tell me which would be better, the 360 version or the wii version?

Sorry for sounding like a noob but I don't understand all this framerate/technical stuff and I want to get the right one. I don't want to be disappointed :(

Well framerate isn't a complicated thing, it's basically how smoothly it runs. 15 frames per second means 15 pictures every second, 60 means 60 (30 is the American TV standard). More is better. If a game is described as having a bad framerate it means the graphics get ahead of what the game can handle, so the framerate drops often. This means that the whole thing was coded poorly so you should probably stay away.

However, the Wii version is going to be basically a different game compared to the PS3/Xbox360 ones, and we've got bugger-all word on it so far, so wait.

Hmmm, well, none of them look spotless in terms of framerates. There were notable chugs in intense parts in both the 360 and Wii versions. However, the PS3 version was chugging ALL THE DAMN TIME. That's disgusting.

To paste from an earlier topic, you'll also want to keep this in mind-

PS3/360 - Sonic Unleashed on the "Hedgehog Engine"
PS2/Wii - Unleashed lite, with the same motifs but different level design by Dimps and worse graphics

Was that different level design thing ever proven?  Because it still sounds lame.

Anyhow, the game looks pretty linear (Not surprising) with a few slight alternate methods of the same route, but I'm watching idiots, so...

Also I wonder if you can slam down on the boxes two minutes and forty seconds in on the Wii video.

Also it seems like boosting is required to stay fast in the Wii version.  Bummer.

Yes, an early trailer of the 360/PS3 version shows a totally different stage for the level in the Wii video.

Actually, this is the only video I've seen where somebody doesn't slam through the boxes in the floor, and wall kicks upwards instead. Unfortunately, he misses the homing attack chain on the the higher route shortly after, and the dash ring he hits pushes him onto the route that everybody who bashed the boxes ended up on.

Well I have to say that does look pretty nice. I'm impressed by how well the Wii version graphics hold up against the Hedgehog Engine. Wonder if the PS2 version will look the same, though.

Video comments:
Wii Trailer:
OK, so the Greece graphics do look rather toned down.  But otherwise, I don't think High Europe looks quite as easy anymore, plus now that I think about it, were the early levels of the Genesis games all that difficult?  Well, I mean, Green Hill/Emerald Hill/Angel Island/Mushroom Hill were pretty easy.  I really can't tell anymore whether High Europe or Mykonos is the first stage of the Wii version.
Egypt Trailer:
Now THIS looks somewhat more difficult for some reason.  I can't really place it, it just does.  The music kinda stinks though ... I mean come on, Keys the Ruin is due for a reprise any day now....  <_<

Very pleased from the site's information that, whilst advertised as such, this game does NOT occur in the real world - each location is given a fictional name, flag and description.
New names:
Apotos - Greece
Spagonia - High Europe
Chun-nan - China
Shamar - Egypt
Empire City - probably New York (because a similar stage has been confirmed)
Holoska - somewhere in the Arctic; possibly Siberia
Mazuri - looks like Africa, most likely the stage we saw in the first leak
Abadat - by location, probably Australia (also could be the leaked stage)

Further notes:
The Werehog stages seem to include these yellow crystals that don't appear in the other videos for some reason.  The Egypt stage video shows a wizard-like enemy, and a shot of Sonic with some kind of fire powerup.
Site refers to "unlockable areas"; whether these are in-stage areas unlockable by powerup, or more Hidden Island / SA2B Green Hill isn't stated.
Jump pads a la SA/SADX confirmed; these appear to have controller button symbols on them for the actual jumping.
One part refers to his "new friend's lost memory".  I don't want to think of how this has manifested itself before.

I must say, the Xbox 360 build looks absolutely amazing. It may be linear, but all I want from a Sonic game is a great time and it looks like Sonic Unleashed is going to supply that demand! :)

Well said.

Honestly, Unleashed is really holding up and I'd buy it if it weren't for the skepticism surrounding the whole Werehog concept.

I mean, it's not that it's slow or anything. Cause it's not in my books. It's just... different. But I'm afraid that the story behind it may complicate the gameplay which was the case with SatSR, imo (but don't get me wrong, it's a great game).

I'll be renting it before a purchase, for sure. No matter how badly I want it.

What'll interest me the most is how critics will recieve it. May I go ahead and predict IGN's inevitable 6.5 score? kthnx...

Unleashed looks great so far from alll the videos I saw on youtube and the sega site, but I probably going to wait a month to buy this game.
Shortcuts I have discovered: SSR Skeleton Dome Mission 12 Gate ditch, SA2 Battle: spring dodge.

Any word on the load times?

I mean seriously, the PS3 vid had the same 20-second loading as S06. Those type of problems shouldn't exist anymore.
