World 2-3

I almost gave my self a heart attack when I got 242 as the time.

I thought at first max would be 241 beacuase I was so close to it every time.
I played for hours getting 240 after 240 hopeing just to once get 241 that I knew
had to be possible.
On my last try it looked like any other run but when I hit the flag pole and looked at the time 242 I said to my self "I finally reached max".

Let it be known I was the first to get this time of 242 on world 2-3.

Almost forgot the game was super mario bros 1.

240 is max. I held right and B the entire time and that was what I got.

So did I. I held right and B as well the whole time.

I did extremely short jumps just to make it to the next ledge.
A perfect climb up the stairs.
A quick drop to the bottom of the flag pole to finish.

I got 240 every time I missed up going up the stairs almost 241 some times.
So when I did all this and perfectly went up the stairs I got 242.

Do you do all this perfectly tell it can't be done any faster?

To make sure I played it again for about 2 hours and I got 242.

I felt like playing a few more times and got it again I'm getting better at it.

Thats why I call this a world record. I wish I could tape this sometime I'm doing it on a hand held so it's kind of hard to tape. But 242 is 100% possible I seen it with my own two eyes 3 times.

TAS means tool-assisted speedrun and unless you have an unknown glitch to abuse it's absolutely impossible to be faster than it.
But as you said you play on a hand-held I guess it's just different there. I always thought it'd be the same, but if you can get 242 there it's definitely not the same version.

I tried getting this time on the old NES version has not worked out I have only gotten 240.
The hand-held should have a place were you can just submit scores to it seeing that it is a little diffrent.One thing though I tried other levels such as the castles and I'm not two game seconds higher than max?
I'll change my time back to 240 for now.

Did you play on a version of the game for the gameboy advance? If any other handheld version, it was explicitly excepted from the 'acceptable versions' list.

The game is Super Mario Bros. Deluxe. I usaly play the old nes for this game
but I have been trying to collect all the medals for Super Mario Bros. Deluxe so
I played 2-3 trying to get a big score and got 242 as a time.

There should be a place for this game to put scores down on.
I also checked the acceptable versions list right now very carefully.
I'll probally get most of my times from the NES like I did on all the times
so far except for the the time on 2-3.

So it's been... 6 months since the last post here, but here's why Super Mario Bros. Deluxe (GBC) can get 242 in 2-3, while the NES-NTSC version can only get 240.  (There are a couple of things I just found in the past few days.)


1. In SMB Deluxe, Mario travels 3.5 fewer blocks of horizontal distance in 2-3.  This seems to save 22 frames; 1 second on the game's timer equals 24 frames.
- The third platform is 2 blocks shorter in length than in NES/SNES, 10 blocks long instead of 12 blocks. (2 block advantage)
- The end staircase is missing one step, so that it's not too tall for the small screen.  Thus, the staircase is also 1 block shorter in length.  The flagpole is not shorter, but the jump feels the same because the jump to the flagpole is 1 block shorter in length. (2 block advantage)
- Mario starts out 0.5 blocks behind his NES/SNES starting position. (0.5 block disadvantage)

2. In SMB Deluxe, Mario's acceleration on the ground is faster than in NES-NTSC, saving 6 frames at the beginning.


These two things mean Deluxe saves 28 frames (1 game second plus 4 frames), but it actually saves only 25-27 frames relative to the game timer, due to timer technicalities.  Still, it means slightly more than a game second is saved.  Since NES-NTSC can get extremely close to 241 (maybe even 1 frame away), this means Deluxe can go all the way to 242.

Also, I think NES-PAL can get 241.  It has the faster ground acceleration (point 2 above), but the level is the same as NES-NTSC.
