The Random .giz Topic
« on: September 07, 2007, 04:12:40 am »
So yeah, I'm tired of making a new topic every time I'm bored and want to share some random thing I found in a Genesis game, so why not make a compilation that everyone can add to! This is generally for random crap that doesn't deserve to be turned into a video and added to the site as well, or my case where the site just hates me and won't accept file transfers at all.

A rundown on how I set up my post:

FILE - the attatchment you need to download if you want to see the trick/run
GAME - what game you need to play the giz in gens+
ZONE - where the giz takes place
INFO - what the giz is about

To start, here's a few you may have seen... and a few you may not have seen! (hint: they're attatchments)

FILE: sb2.giz
GAME: Sonic 1
ZONE: Scrap Brain Act  2
INFO: Ring Attack Trick

This is the full RA .giz I made before ybbun told me about another trick to get to where the record is now. I promised not to tell that trick though, so this .giz is of a run without that trick. :(

FILE: l1ringsJ.giz
GAME: Sonic 1 (Japanese version)
ZONE: Labyrinth Act 1
INFO: Full Ring Attack

This is a full 107 ring attack of Labyrinth 1, also showing where the extra ring is. I found this on Sonic Mega Collection because that's where I was ring-attacking Sonic 1.

FILE: ht1-kRA.giz
GAME: Sonic 2 & Knuckles
ZONE: Hill Top 1
INFO: Full Ring Attack + Score Attack demonstration

In the first minute is where I show the trick that enables someone to get a score of 90,000+ if repeated a million times, and the rest of it is a ring attack to get the perfect bonus.

FILE: cp2kscore.giz
GAME: Sonic 2 & Knuckles
ZONE: Chemical Plant 2
INFO: Score/Ring Attack

This shows where all 297 rings are located, and how to achieve the 2nd place score. No clue what stanski did to get under 3 minutes total :(

FILE: lr2-kRA.giz
GAME: Sonic 3 & Knuckles
ZONE: Lava Reef Act 2 w/ Knuckles
INFO: Full Ring Attack

A full ring attack of the zone with Knuckles. Props to mike for tipping me off to the beginning part, and I added a little something to the end to make 286 rings. Also note the weird part where Knuckles seems to be running down a wall after I spindash-jump for the ring I missed.

FILE: lr2-klol.giz
GAME: Sonic 3 & Knuckles
ZONE: Lava Reef Act 2 w/ Knuckles
INFO: Random lol

This is what happens if you keep running down the wall in the last .giz. You get into the wall, but it doesn't really seem to help at all :(

FILE: ss-sRA.giz
GAME: Sonic 3 & Knuckles
ZONE: Sky Sanctuary w/ Sonic
INFO: Ring Attack Route

This zone is kind of confusing to RA, but this is the route I used. Shows where the randomly placed 10 box is that Thorn discovered. Run was good up till the boss in which I got hit :( But this at least shows the route!

Feel free to post your own random .giz's!

I approve of this thread!

That trick in LR2 was rather clever...but you missed two really obvious rings. :S

And how d'you make Sonic go up the tube twice in SB2?

Crowbar the reason he didn't get those rings is that if he goes over 50 before that glide and climb he is screwed. (Incidentally, for cases like this, I'm wondering whether allowing Super forms might actually bring about an increase in the total possible. Something to consider.)

If I organised my FTP folder better it would make a bit more sense but if you search through www.soniccenter.org/mike89 there's a bunch of giz's that I've put up over the past year or so. Most of them are self explanatory, in the form IC2T-R = Ice Cap 2 Tails Rings.

After screwing around in debug mode for awhile on Mushroom Hill 1 trying to find a way to break into Knuckles's path for ring/score attacking, I finally did! Check it out. Of course I still don't know how to get those last three rings in his path out in a manner that you can still get back out of the hole with Sonic, but this is a start... (water shield bounce on the badnik)

Meh, it doesn't matter, you may as well make a video, everyone knows about the 247 now heh. I think the original technique (not using the fall-through-the-scenery glitch, and trying to get 172 instead of 169) was much more obscure and interesting than trying to get 247 with the glitch.

One of the challenges in mike's tournament involved defeating Robotnik in Launch Base 1.  Normally you're supposed to defeat a robot at the end of the stage instead, so the process is fairly strange, as seen in eredani's video (done in S3&K) in the following archive: http://www.soniccenter.org/tournament/R8L1.zip

I tried this challenge myself.  I also had a lightning shield handy.  This resulted in a strange sight after defeating Robotnik:

Finally got around to doing this. Scrap Brain 2 RA. ( :( ybbun)

On a side note, I went through the first part twice on a different run and when I finished the level, I ended up with 263 rings! It seems like some rings/boxes can actually reappear even after you collect them. Though, when I talked to mike about it, he said he found something like that awhile ago and it was banned, so I'm not submitting it.

Falling through the floor in a good place in SO2! Basically, you need to reach maximum jump height from the flat surface (ie hold the jump button) then hold left onto the wall. Works every time for me.

EDIT: Star Light 3 261 rings!

This was so nerve wracking :( Sandopolis 1 Sonic Ring attack. My time at the end was 9:38

Edit: mike asked for the weird trick I found in Hidden Palace so here it is. Knuckles being beaten in 3 hits (though my first encounter with it, it was one hit)

Here's the solution to the three-ring mystery of Icecap 1. If you know what you missed by watching, you know why Tails' perfect is 760, not 757.

Labyrinth 2 trick!  I think carretero found this one too, but I dunno.

Also, at fastest, you'll BARELY pass the rotating spikes.  I recorded this before I found that out, and that is crucial to 30.

This will blow your mind, and possibly rewrite the methodology for TA-ing, RA-ing, and SA-ing LB2-K.

Sonic's Boss can be destroyed as Knuckles! :O
Time freezes after the destruction of the first boss, and does not restartfor the rest of the level! :OO
