News and Updates / Re: Happy 6th Birthday TSC!
« on: October 23, 2009, 11:00:29 am »
I guess that this is the first time I will actually say it, even though I have always felt that I should.
But TSC really is a truly magnificient game competition site: Jubilant 6th Anniversary! For all that it's worth.

General Sonic / On the 9th September of 2009
« on: September 11, 2009, 04:09:56 pm »
I had made but a lone supposition with a single eminent clause...
That Sonic is pure awesome. And I had conceded in this.
Then my mind quickly raced, in a blur reminiscing aeons of brilliant ideas and distinct hopes leaving behind a barely distinguishable trace, whereafter only a mere shadow was left, to hardly be able of retracing. A decisive step towards fulfillment was undertaken at the epiphany; a quintessential need for perfection to reign in accomplishment, was finally acknowledged. A forceful sensation dominated and boosted my spirit, infusing it with the potent vigor of a true enabled soul.
And from that day on I changed.
Perhaps too subtly at first to be easily piquing their interest, or mark an overly dramatic shift of pace: the surroundings were mostly oblivious. The tempo change persists there, regardless, and asserts its effect without ameliorated force. The condition has since been quickly ascended, and its force has greatly intensified at a rapid pace. It waits to be fully realised, a power that once laid largely dormant and supressed.
But this has to be said.
An intellect is not to be wasted.

Since I don't know exactly what your problem is, I'll just say this: You might need the latest Gens version (v.10a) to play them, even though it shouldn't be necessary.
P.S: I just tried to play them in Gens9.5b, and it doesn't work. Mainly because the new savestates are apparently incompatible with it, somehow...

Attached to this post I have a triple treat of first-rate .gmv speedrun recordings and their respective savestates, that show me finishing AI2K in 36 seconds (only one second behind the tool-assisted-run record by Upthorn), HC2S in 0:28 and MG1T with 0:52 in real time.

Competition Central / Eredani returns? An explanation.
« on: December 10, 2008, 06:00:03 pm »
As some of you will remember, I had promised earlier on in the year that I would overtake the #1 spot on the Sitewide rankings by the end of it. A promise that I earnestly meant to keep, but now reasonably won't have the opportunity to actually fulfill. Unless a miracle happens; I've done it before.
Anyhow, there are some things about my competitive absence that I feel the need to explain regardless of how uncomfortable it is and how much I hate to do this, so I'll go ahead and tell you a few simple things about my conditions: Long since before I first joined TSC or even had any active thoughts regarding game-competition, I've been living in a demeaning and unstimulating environment that has given me relatively poor self-confidence (as amazing as that may sound) and consistently kept down my motivation to a minimum; not to mention that I'm apparently suffering from a severe case of bad luck (and I've come up with several probable theories regarding the poor luck that I have, but that's irrelevant here). Now, those are things that have been prominent factors throughout a lot of my competition, as some of you no doubt recognize the symptoms of now that you hear it said; even if I've actually been fairly motivated and sure of myself at times, mainly when challenged for a record.
The truth of the matter is... that for a long time I've been subject to many problems that are entirely beyond my control; Things that have been incredibly frustrating for me to experience and thence made that both my -will- and -ability- to compete has been severally diminished (not that I've ever become bad at it as such). Which is partially because it has become a near impossibility for me to have any good opportunities of even getting a chance to compete in some games. As an example I'll reveal to you that my Xbox's DVD-reader is fairly broken and has had a habit of -repeatedly crashing- unprovokedly for about 3 years in a row now, thus effectively making -almost my entire time of competing in Sonic Heroes- an unbelievably frustrating and burdensome hell to endure (and that's in addition to the many glitches that are already present in the game itself...), with crashes happening randomly and unexpectedly either when trying to load a level, while in the middle of playing one, or precisely when you hit the goal ring based on a dice roll; Try to imagine that. Oh, and some of the stages aren't even playable at all anymore, courtesy of me inadvertently lending the disc to someone who doesn't really care about how they should be handled.
So, here's a simple question: Does this sound harsh to you? I can testify that it is. In fact, I can barely see why people with working consoles are having so many issues with Sonic Heroes, thanks to the merciless, always-impending mid-game crashes that I've had to experience. No wonder that I haven't been feeling like competing in general, eh?
Well, okay. Now that I've finally decided to spill the beans and tell you all something about myself, I can go on to the next point... Near the conclusion of the last (Real) Top 10, I wrote an as-of-yet unsubmitted post where I had elaborated more thoroughly on the subject, but that I never sent for a few reasons that are still very actual. One of those reasons being that I felt a very potent shame and embarassment over the fact that I had no real power, nor any control over my own life situation including the possibility for me to engage in competition when it's something that I really like to do, not to mention that I really hate the prospect of making anyone -else- depressed with my own issues. However, I might post that one too sometime just in order to shed some more light for the curious.
Regardless, to anyone who cares at all: Starting immediately today (on the 11th December), as I've conjured up a deal with powers that shalln't be mentioned, I'm definitely going back to competing and will at least make a very valiant attempt to lessen the gap between me and the champion spot in the time that I have left.

Leaderboard Disputes / Re: PAL in Sonic Triple Trouble Allowed or Not?
« on: May 10, 2008, 02:04:20 pm »
Yeah, I thought that way too, but it's confusing how some emulators manage to screw with that in GG games (Emukon, Fusion). So, clearly this means that only SMS games have any natural NTSC/PAL differences. And the differences in the emulated GG versions stem from the fact that those emulators are programmed to work in the same manner with both platforms indiscriminately... even when it comes to PAL/NTSC.

« on: May 10, 2008, 01:49:02 pm »
If what PPA said about a PAL version not existing of STT is true then I don't see any good reason for it to be allowed, for self-evident reasons. Though, could you elaborate on how you know this for sure, PPA? But the GG/SMS emulator Dega (which is the one I've been using) seems to support the claim since the PAL option is greyed out when STT is loaded. So, I agree with the others. And for the record, since I've heard from Stefan that Bertin baselessly claimed that I have used PAL mode for my STT times (and further that this was his 'justification' to do so himself), I only played STT in NTSC mode when I got my records.

Your score on this chart is impossible to get because of the way the speed bonus works in the game, and the same principle applies to your TH2T score. There is no known way of attaining such high scores at all. And looking at the rest of your bracket, you had previously reverted 3 other scores because they were absurdly high. Comparing this to your other stats which are all blue or green, and it seems very unreasonable that you could even get a single record in the game.

There is simply no viable reason to list the same act twice just because one of two valid versions has a bit worse starting position, nor to unnecessarily force the use of only that one version. As has always been the case in competition when you're trying to get the best stat that's legitimately possible, you just use the more advantageous version of the game when you have access to both. Not to mention that anyone who has S3&K should pretty much already have access to S&K alone as a prerequisite, which completely voids any point in discerning between the two. Any "unfairness" between them is a non-issue here.
On an ironic note, I only now realise that in S&K alone, MH1 Knuckles also has a further starting position than in S3&K, just as Sonic does. And I only used S3&K for TAing MH1K since I hadn't tested it out in S&K, so this means that the time record can go down by 4 seconds. I wonder which version SkyLights used...

Also, at fastest, you'll BARELY pass the rotating spikes. I recorded this before I found that out, and that is crucial to 30.
I wouldn't be so sure about the "barely" passing them part, unless your definition of "fastest" actually isn't very fast. I tend to feel pretty safe with my distance to them in good runs...

General Sonic / Re: Sonic 1 Megamix

Shadow is far from being just a copy, which Metal Sonic is. Shadow is a different character from Sonic and have his own personality and unique abilities, while Metal Sonic is by definition a lifeless imitation of Sonic that is always scrapped by the true thing in mere moments.
The fact that Shadow also happen to be a hedgehog doesn't automatically make him a copy either, and it doesn't prevent his character from being very different from Sonic's. Shadow actually have his own features and abilities, and even if they are of the same species the ultimate life-form is still very distinct from Sonic. It's utterly pointless to complain about Shadow being a hedgehog, there's absolutely nothing wrong with that.
Shadow doesn't have an "emo" personality at all, and he never whines about anything as opposed to yourself. Shadow is a collected and strong character, which doesn't really fit the description of being whiny... In fact, irrational haters like you are much more whiny about Shadow than he ever could be. And how does that even matter for Megamix when Shadow clearly doesn't talk in the game? Your argument against Shadow being in Megamix lacks any merit whatsoever, and your awful suggestion to replace him with a worse character is downright pointless. Shadow was put into Megamix solely for gameplay and aesthetical purposes and not story, which makes your attacks on his personality completely irrelevant (nevermind that Shadow actually is a good character), and Metal Sonic does in fact have worse ability and appearance than both hedgehogs do.
There's no reason for Shadow to not be in Megamix, and Metal Sonic would certainly look worse than Shadow in-game. Did I mention that Metal Sonic doesn't suit Megamix's theme at all? You say that they could use his sprites from Sonic CD, yet he doesn't even have a jump or spindash in that game, he just flies above the ground and that's all. And since when can that robot double-jump and homing attack like Shadow do in this game? Metal Sonic just doesn't work as a playable character in 2D Sonic games.

« on: May 21, 2007, 05:07:53 pm »Maybe a weird idea, and too late. But did you ever think about replacing Shadow with Metal Sonic? He'd suit the theme a bit better than newbie Mr. Gunemo....How can that suit the game's theme better if it's weird?
So you're suggesting that a robotic copy of Sonic that always get trashed fits this game better than Shadow, who actually has his own abilities and a distinct character? There is no reason to have that mechanical look-alike in the game when you have the real Sonic to play as, and Shadow is a perfectly good alternative character. Also Metal Sonic sprites would be hard to make and look bad, because Metal Sonic's lifeless robotic frame doesn't fit the game nearly as well as Sonic or Shadow do.

It's sad to see a speedrunner of your quality step down from competing, but nonetheless it's positive that you've achieved the things you have here and are on better terms with your life.
Truth be told, I always had a great deal of respect for your strong motivation and playing skills, mike, you've been a great competitor to me and an influence even if I didn't let it show. You repeatedly challenged me on several Sonic games to achieve seemingly impossible records, and I've consistently been forced to improve my skills to perform that. I really enjoyed the battles we've had, and I hope that you too have gained something out of it.

Rules Revisions / Re: S3&K special stage inclusion?
« on: February 15, 2007, 04:55:17 pm »For:That is irrelevant, as those are completely normal Acts and you aren't supposed to go out of your way to collect every Ring in the level, even if it's possible to do that.
-Game encourages maxxing in S2 Acts too with same bonus
The perfect bonus earned by collecting all of the available Rings in the S3&K Special Stages is trivial to earn, and the SS's were made with the intention of the player getting every single Ring during normal play. You don't even need to be competing at all to go on and get all the Rings, and it's very easy to do normally.
The point isn't simply that they aren't Acts, but that Acts are well-suited for competition by their nature and are always ranked. Those special stages are intentionally simple to max the Rings out on and you're even encouraged to do so naturally, something that doesn't hold true for any of the regular Acts.

Rules Revisions / Re: S2006: Differences between difficulties and how they will be handled by TSC
« on: February 10, 2007, 07:26:06 pm »We don't track Super Hard times in Heroes, or Expert times in Shadow. I think that despite the alternate method of obtaining the difficult stages in S2006, it's still the same concept. The reason hard mode isn't ranked for those games is because the times aren't saved, and there's no completion screen available to show the achieved time. If the final time was shown at level completion then there would be rankings for Super Hard- and Expert mode on TSC, like the SA2 Mission 5's are.
The Very Hard Mode in Sonic 06 is an expansion of the original game, and they should be allowed, as is the case with Sonic & Knuckles lock-on charts for Sonic 2 and 3.

It isn't very difficult at all to avoid the slot machines in Casino Night, so there should be no problems with disallowing them for Ring attacks. In case we add Ring divisions for Casino Night Zone, then we would also have to add Score divisions for those levels, and it should be allowed to use the point slots a single time each.

« on: January 25, 2007, 03:27:15 pm »
Onryou have also used TBG for several of his times, along with the boss ones. His Dark time total is strangely his best one, and I'm willing to bet that he used TBG for most of his Dark times. For a list: Times > Final Fortress > Dark 6:50:24, Mystic Mansion > Dark 5:29:93, Bullet Station > Dark 6:24:21, Extra > Ocean Palace > Dark 4:03:63. I'm a bit uncertain regarding which other times he have used TBG on, because he doesn't really have that many good stats to compare to.
Most of videogamemaster777's Dark times are much better than they should be compared to his Sonic times. For example his Bingo Highway Dark time is 5:31:98, which is 12 seconds faster than with Team Sonic even though it should be slower, and his Lost Jungle Dark is 50 seconds faster than with Sonic. I think it's safe to assume he used TBG for his times.
For Chaotix Rings it should be allowed to use TBG, as it isn't abusive if no advantage in stats is gained by using it. You can get the exact same Ring counts with or without TBG, and the only difference is in the amount of time that's spent in the stage, but the time/score result is irrelevant when Ring attacking. An exception to this is Final Fortress Chaotix, as the point total for comboing every enemy can exceed what you would normally get with time bonus, and Power Plant Dark, where the increased point total besides time bonus can also be larger. Using TBG while RAing those stages to finish faster and get more combos could give you a higher score than would otherwise be achievable even with a larger time bonus, and that score would obviously be invalid under the rules.

When I asked bertin about his dubious times in the chat, he lied and told to me that he didn't have anymore times that used checkpoints; contradicting what he have said in this topic. bertin have been constantly refusing to co-operate with anyone who have talked to him about his times, and I can easily pull out logs to prove this if made necessery.
The main reason bertin got pressured is because you kept defending him without anything that resembles good reasoning, you have posted a lot of crap in this topic which only serve to make the situation worse for him, it wouldn't go this far if you two didn't fuel the fire. I mean you claim that you know nothing about STT and bertin's times in that game, so why did you feel the need to defend him in a matter you aren't familiar with? And why didn't he admit to cheating and correct his times in the first place?

I seems doubtful but, he had every intention to making this right when he got back. it just seems like he got alot of pressure because he was gone. and then after 2 weeks when he finally came back this topic already flared up into a whole big mess. but he changed his times as soon as he got to my house.

Chao_Fan > Sonic Heroes > Scores > Hang Castle > Rose 73570 1/46 11-03-06
Chao_Fan > Sonic Heroes > Scores > Mystic Mansion > Rose 72530 1/47 11-03-06
Take another look at your scores for those stages.

Leaderboard Disputes / Re: I call BS on Nelspike TX
« on: January 13, 2007, 12:58:18 pm »Now now Eredani, we don't need this inflated into a war-scaled battle. He's gotten his warning. He got the warning for submitting stats that are against the rules, and he have admitted to it since. But he have also submitted false stats that he haven't explained the reasoning behind when he was questioned about them.
Nelspike submitted a Ring count of 315 along with his score for Angel Island 1 Sonic, which implies that the ring bonus alone would've been 31500. Add 1000 points for the sub-boss along with the huge time bonus, and you get 132500 total score while not counting badniks. That's 1800 points missing from the submission.
He have yet to explain why he submitted the 100200 AI1K score, and it's very improbable that he only earned an additional 200 points in his entire 101200 Hydrocity 1 Knuckles score run.

« on: January 12, 2007, 03:11:08 pm »Eredani, what I said is that glitches are allowed, and that it was no use for us to be discussing that right now. So, I'll submit a time for DEZ1 as Tails. Just got 2:07 ;-)
One thing, for you eredani: How the heck you guys do 0:40 in CNZ1? MAyeb glitches, or Super/Hyper Forms I suppose. WHo guarantees me you don't use them?Edit: Since when are glitches disallowed in competition?
Good job in continuing to contradict yourself... What is the reason behind you never bothering to answer to anything we say properly? You keep twisting your own words the other way around after we prove you wrong, and then claim the points we make as your own, wtf?

« on: January 12, 2007, 10:23:30 am »I'm not calling unskilled people to you guys. I didn't know the rules, that's all, and as SB said, you guys would have bigger scores if what I did was valid!
Meh, I think there's no biggy to have an argument here. I just say that I made a mistake! One thing, for you eredani: How the heck you guys do 0:40 in CNZ1? MAyeb glitches, or Super/Hyper Forms I suppose. WHo guarantees me you don't use them?
...Exactly my point? So why did you use that trick if you're capable of such excellent logic as to deduce that we didn't use it for our own scores?
How have anyone claimed that you bring unskilled people to TSC? You didn't read the rules, and if that's all there is to it then you shouldn't be competing here in the first place. And before anyone forgets, how would you get 100200 points on AI1 Knuckles?
Where did you get the idea that anyone here have 40 seconds on Carnival Night 1? As for if we're trustable, I direct your attention to this page: http://www.soniccenter.org/videos/sonic_3
When you make a giz recording, it's impossible to use savestates without desyncing the movie. Which means that what you see is what the player have actually done in real time, and even if we don't always use giz files to record gameplay, we're still not using tools for the simple reason that it's cheating. It isn't allowed for anyone to use them in a completed run through a level in order for the attained stat to be a legit record.
Edit: Since when are glitches disallowed in competition?
