General Sonic / Question about times

I'm sorry if this is a stupid question, but I don't see an answer anywhere on the site. In the rankings, when a time is posted in italics, just what exactly does that mean?

Well, I tried Casinopolis on my CG last night, and while you were right of course, SadisticMystic, the wall is not false, I was still able to get to the other side and almost make it to the capsule. If you go right into the corner, then charge up a spin dash and hold just the right direction, you'll pop through to the other side (there are a few places in SA where you can pop through walls where 2 meet at a corner; Amy Twinkle Park for example). Now just by going through you just can't quite make it to the ledge. I can land in the room, but on the bottom. Once, just once, I was able to press the jump button after I let go to spin dash, but overshot it. Once in a while, I'll hold to the left a little too much and land in that really big room right above the entrance to the vault. Please, if anyone else is willing to help me try on the GC version, I really want to know if it can be done.

I also want to ask for some help. On Amy Hot Shelter, does anyone know of any doors or walls that can be glitched through? Mainly the 2 instances where you have to place the colored boxes. My time is just shy of 5 minutes and while of course it's not a perfect run, I know I'm missing something important.

BTW are any of you going to get Shadow the Hedgehog and/or Sonic Sliders when they come out? I sure am. It'll be great for it to be fresh and I can start on level footing with all of you.

I just watched the video. Nice. That was cute. I have no idea if that's possible on the Dreamcast. My DC is broken currently and I haven't gotten around to getting a replacement. It amazes me that after all these years people are still fiding glitches and shortcuts. This has to be the game with the most ever.

Here's the deal about the Dreamcast Sonic Adventure: It all boiled down to a third party controller. The Interact Quantum Fighter Pad. With this pad, because it had different input values (I don't really know the particulars but the 200% theory might be correct), you were able to do things you normally couldn't with a standard pad. When you jumped, along with holding down the Right Shoulder button you could go much faster in the air, attaining jumps not normally possible. There were other things: With tails, while flying, you would hold down the right shoulder button and move the stick left and right as you were flying forward and you'd go faster. With Gamma, the controller was programmable, and someone figured out a way to program it in such a fashion that Gamma has INFINITE lock-on time. However, you couldn't go through the whole level locking on and then let go, if you went far enough out of range of a group of enemies, it would reset. Amy of course, could fly farther and faster through the air when she both jumped and hammer jumped. Knuckles went a little faster in the air, but not much. And of course, it had no effect on Big.

Here were the results of the Sega 1999-2000 Sonic Adventure contests. Due to the fact that I missed a couple (because my DC crapped out and had to save up to buy a new one) I missed 2 contest results and I forgot to write down the winning time of the last contest, and I forgot to write down info during the last few:

Interesting notes: It was not known if 'I-Pads' were used for the first contest, but it's certainly possible. People openly admitted using them during Windy Valley. Emerald Coast was later bettered to 59 seconds after the contest was over. Emerald Coast for Big was the weight of 1 fish. Amy Twinkle Park was obviously done by going over the wall at the very start. I used a different route then that and my current one. It doesn't work in the GC version, but back then, even without the I-Pad, after you opened the double doors, you could jump on top of them, then up and to the right to an invisible ledge, then up, then to the left, through a wall and to the balloon. There is a well known glitch with Gamma that I'm sure everyone knows. If you target a group of enemies, then get hit, before they do, you'll see 2 numbers a 1 second and then another one dependent on how many enemies you targeted. The 1 second will count down, but you'll get time added equal to the other number, so essentially, you're getting doulble time. I think the Sonic Twinkle Circuit winning time was around 1:30 or 1:29, Firehawk might remember some times/scores that I don't. Knuckles in Casinopolis was around 6-8 seconds for the the winning time. Lost World with Knuckles was obviously a cheat. At this time, a few gamers had figured out how to hack into their VMUs. That really sucked. There was a lot of cheating going on then. I'm just as guilty, I used an I-Pad. I did it just to be able to compete and get an acceptable time/score. I started using one for the Amy Twinkle Park contest. Most people used I-Pads back then, but others hacked into their VMU's and others even shared times/scores. By that I mean a top player would get a good time, email it to a friend who wasn't as good and the friend would submit that time as his own. Then, the good player would beat his original best and submit that. A few players admitted to that. I couldn't believe it.

I trust everybody here and really love this site. The guys who are most respected, obviously, are the ones who have submitted videos, so everyone can see they aren't cheating I really like that.

That's all I have to say for now. I'm having so much fun going back and playing my Sonic games again. All of you have inspired me to do better. Thank you all for rekindling my interest and desire to better my times. I hope to make a lot of friends here and swap stories/glitches/shortcuts/strategies.

I am definately going to give Casinopolis a go later. Look out, I'm right behind you!

Hey SadisticMystic,

There was only one Casinopolis contest, and that was with Knuckles. I don't have a lot of time right now (I'm on a lunch break right now) but later today or tomorrow, I'll list all the contests from back then with results. I don't quite know what you're refering to as far as a 2 minute advantage. If you're talking about Sonic's level, on the DC I only got 2:29.39 and there weren't too many people back then that got better than that. I see comparable times here for the GC version. That wasn't one of the levels that you had an advantage with. One such level would be Windy Valley. During the contests, I only got around 1:33 but years later when I figured out what the top guys were doing, I got down to a 1:08. There are shortcuts on the DC version you couldn't imagine. Like on WV right after coming out of the tornado, you can jump behind you and land on the path right before the loop which is right before the part where you 'run on the wind path'. From there, you can jump and land right on the capsule believe it or not! It's not easy, it takes skill, but it was possible.

Were you refering to me? Did you think that I was Firehawk? If so, thank you, that's flattering. But he's better than me, and he's from Canada and a bit younger. He was really good at those Sonic Adventure contests way back when. One of the best. We know pretty much the same stuff, because we both competed back then and also swapped shortcuts and strategies.

Hey F-Man,

That's so cool that you competed back then! What screen name did you go by? I was one of the oldest in the contest at 27! Do you remember the name XMart? He's the same age as me and lives in England. We still keep in touch. And I see Firehawk once in a while. I know you ALL remember him, he was a regular on this site. He was really good back then. During the contests, the top guys were around 15 years old! It was insane!

It's a pleasure to meet you, I definately recognize your name from this site.  You probably would have done better than you think. There are certain shortcuts and glitches only available in the Dreamcast version. Most of my times are MUCH faster on the DC. Like Twinkle Park with Sonic I got a 1:04 and Speed Highway with Tails I got a 29. It's almost like 2 totally different games.

You're right about Sand Hill (jumping back up the course). The guy that did that said he played for about 20 hours straight to get that! Insane! Towards the end of the contest players were cheating and it wasn't fun anymore. They were doing things like using a Gameshark or hacking into their VMU's to alter their times/scores.

I'm really glad to get back into SA. I really enjoyed competing and this brings back great memories. I have been improving my times/scores so much lately thanks to this site. I will help out in any way I can. If anyone wants to know shortcuts/glitches/strategies for any level I will gladly help out when I can. On the flipside I would really appreciate some help with a few levels. Namely Hot Shelter with Amy. If anyone knows any good shortcuts or how to glitch through any doors please let me know!

I just checked and the times were switched. I know what you mean about having it close to perfect, but there are so many shortcuts and glitches in this game anything is possible. When I competed in the SA contests that SEGA held in '99 I saw some pretty amazing times/scores. For example, on Sand Hill with Sonic, the top score was over 1,000,000 pts! No joke. And Knuckles in Red Mountain was around 5 sec. Those were 2 that I remember the most. By the way, is there anyone here that competed in those? If so I'd love to hear from you.

I just tried to switch the times and after 10 minutes, they were still the same. Anyone know why? Is it because I'm inputting a slower time than I had previously? Anyone know what's going on?

About Twinkle Park with Amy...

There are actually 2 shortcuts on Twinkle Park. The first one (which is the one I use for my 50.96 sec time), is right after you enter the castle. As you enter the castle from the first part, try to be on the left hand side and jump into the castle so you'll be in the air when you enter. When it switches to the inside, hold forward for a split second. Then as you land, press the stick down-right and jump towards the door (what you are aiming for is the corner of the door where it meets the wall. If you are facing the door from the inside of the castle it's the lower left hand corner). The timing needs to be perfect. You need to hit the bottom corner and do a hammer jump just as you hit the ground. If you did it right, you'll glitch through the door. Now if you just hold that direction, you'll still cut through a bit of the castle and land in a room, but for maximum distance what you want to do is as soon as you go through the door, rotate the stick counter clockwise and when you land you should land near the beginning of the second to last room (which is the one with the mirrors, spiked balls that drop, trap doors and steps that go up). From there, it's a piece of cake to the end.

Now the other one is very difficult. I have never done it, nor seen it done, but have talked to several people that have done it. And according to them, this is how it's done: At the start of the level, jump forward once then jump back towards the gate behind you and just like you did with the door glitch, do the exact same thing on the gate (I'm talking about the gate that is right behind you when the level starts). Except you need to hit the RIGHT corner and not the left. Then, if the timing is perfect, you should hammer jump up and over the wall and land on the slope leading directly up to the balloon. Theoretically it should work on the Gamecube version (they all did it on the Dreamcast version) according to them. But I have not heard of anyone doing it on the GC version. There are a few shortcuts that were in the DC version that they excluded or 'fixed' for the Gamecube version.

Greetings everyone!

My name is Dave Cramer and I'm 34. I'm so glad I stumbled onto this site. I have been playing Sonic Adventure since day one (9/9/99) when the Dreamcast came out. I competed in all the online contests (averaging around 30th place per contest; my best rank for one of them was 7th), and played it long after they ended. Well, my DC crapped out a few years ago, but luckily I got SA, SA2 and Sonic Heroes for the Gamecube and play all of them as much as I can. I am always looking to improve and hope to meet other players here that I can trade tips and strategies with. I welcome anyone to reply or email me at: davecramer7@gmail.com.
