Competition Central / Re: Old Stat Memories Thread

I don't know if I want to start regularly running Mania, because Denuvo is still in the PC version, which is the only platform I can play it on lol. Moral dilemma; against piracy, but also against DRM.

When I was a kid, when I would play games that have a Time Attack option, I would keep lowering my PB. Sonic games are the epitome of speedrunning, since the objective is to go as fast as you can.

Gamers often complain about the slippery, over-precise controls of Heroes, Shadow, and 06. The controls are slippery because your top speed has acceleration that is much higher than in the Adventure games. I actually think that Shadow the Hedgehog controls better than SA2 because of the loose controls.

In the case of 06, the controls are just loose, and your top speed is much slower than the Adventure games when running.

Now that speedrun.com has a New Game+ category for 3 and knuckles, I'm thinking about running it. It's fun to blaze through the game as Hyper Sonic like the invincible epileptic seizure he is.

Sonic 3K is the most technical 2D Sonic game in my opinion, so hopefully, New Game+ doesn't go through the same level of level wrap optimization. 3 and knuckles is a very broken game, so glitches with Hyper Sonic can happen. Happened to me a few times during practice runs.

Competition Central / Old Stat Memories Thread

It's kind of sad that my Egg Dealer and The ARK Neutral stats in Shadow from when I was 10 back in late '08-early '09 are better than what I recently did in those categories. I have some decent to pretty bad times from back then, (Mad Matrix Dark for the bad, Central City Dark for the decent) but I was at least competent to an extent during that time. With age, I would become a much better player, but it's interesting to see my old stats.

Almost all of my submissions from today are originated from a socially robotic Jacko in Elementary School. I knew about speedrunning back in 08, since I watched TASes of Sonic 3K, SA2 runs, bomb hovering in Majora's Mask (even though I hated the game back then, I love it now) and I thought of some strategies in Shadow to save some time back then.

Does anyone have any old stats from when they were kids? Imagine if 10-year-old me knew about The Sonic Center. It's interesting to think about your past as a player.

I recently posted my highest ranked time yet; 1:34.75 on Space Gadget Hero. Pretty good time, but it needs some work done. It's not my favorite level, (Cryptic Castle) but it's fun to run whenever it decides to not troll me.

The way I routed Space Gadget Hero was a bit weird; I did not get the five keys. Instead, I thought it would be more convenient to use Chaos Control Glitch on Save Point 2 and I think Save Point 6 after getting the Hero Aura around the 1 minute mark. It's what Dashjump does, so I thought it would be fun.

The problem is, getting Chaos Control to stop at the save point is an absolute nightmare. I mash X to get it to stop at the checkpoint when I activate Chaos Control, since I know it's very close, but sometimes it won't stop and Shadow just zips along to the pulley where CCG usually stops.

On one of my attempts, I was on the bottom path around the 55-1 minute mark, getting ready to switch the gravity so I could get to the aura, and Shadow just clipped through the floor and died. (Maybe I should record my attempts for future reference lol.)

On the 1:34, I was actually around 1:27-1:29 pace, but I didn't route out the end of the level where the second CCG stops. I did not know that I was next to a door which had a warp hole in it, sending me to the goal ring lol.

Silly me, spending about 5 seconds or so bumbling around not knowing where I landed lol.

Does anyone actually know the timing for stopping Chaos Control on the second checkpoint in Space Gadget? It would help to actually get it consistently for once.

Competition Central / Glitchless IL and SS runs

I know some players don't like level wraps and other exploits in timed runs, and I'm not one of those players. (Unless we're talking about Shadow the Hedgehog. Chaos Control Glitch is too broken for my tastes.) But glitchless IL and single-segment runs would be interesting to watch in my opinion. It would give players who don't like breaking the game down to have some competition, and it wouldn't hurt to have some weird categories once in a while. As a Majora's Mask runner, Zelda certainly has those.

I, myself, love exploiting Sonic games, and video games in general. Level wraps have some interesting setups, especially the difficult ones. there are easy setups. (Oil Ocean 2, Metropolis 2) and some more difficult, but not too hard setups if your pausing method is consistent (Metropolis 3.)
