News and Updates / Re: Submissions are back up

It's great to see submissions back up again GerbilSoft - I know these issues that land on you to fix comes out of your own time, and certainly can't imagine data migration or server problems to be straightforward but think I speak for many we appreciate it, and thanks! ^_^

Wow, that’s an amazing collection you have there. :O As UG95 said, it must be very nice to have that.

It’s very interesting to see what everything (or as near as dammit :P) from the Sonic franchise looks like when put together like that. No doubt, this must have taken you a long while to do (especially based in a country where all this is harder to get hold of).

I wish you all the best, on your quest for your remaining games!

Hi there.
What you could do, is re-enter your previous time, (10.81). Wait for the stat to come through, then re-enter your 10.78 adding in your new link. (Basically, changing your comment).
I realise this won't delete your old video from TSC's video database, but I understand its been a hard period for TSC admin's so this is, most likely the best thing you can do for now. (Since rest assured, those using the url on your updated comment, will direct fellow competitors to the correct video).
Hope that helps :)

I spent my Halloween this year with ArcticDragon (one of my two brothers) in the Brecon Beacons National Park, South Wales.
Though we didn't come here especially for Halloween... (since neither of us do Halloween - but out of our 29 Oct - 1 Nov stay in  S.Wales, it happened to be the best weather day for views)... I can say its been the most interesting 31st October I’ve had!

To elaborate more, in addition to climbing hills and mountainous terrain all day with amazing views all around, we saw a couple interesting things on the way.

Seeing clouds form up below you . It was the speed it happened that was shocking.

(Picture's taken near S.Wales's highest peak, Pen y fan ) Clouds just starting to form.

Taken just 30 seconds later.

And again, after a further minute passed.

These clouds gave us another rare sight, and we saw a circular like rainbow appear just below us. (Called a "glory", or known as a "brocken spectre". -Had to look that one up :P) Long shadows was pretty weird as well.

Later on in the day, we then went off route...and kind of got lost in the dark. Making our way back was tough. We only had starlight, and a mobile phone screen guiding us back, lol. Trying to find the path to lead us down, from the mountain ridge was the hard part. Never seen a sky as starry as that before though!

Arriving back to a Premier Inn Hotel, in Swansea City we ended the day with an All you can eat from Jimmy's. (£16 but got our money's worth!) Little brother (Coolfansonic) phoned up. I then watched Blade on my laptop. (heh, I guess I did celebrate Halloween with a vampire film, lol. Didn't realise that at the time :P)

Since I had to book time off work this week for this....my ordinary Saturday's are usually very boring. Plus getting up at to start work at 10a.m kills me anyway since a.m's are designed for sleeping >_>

Trail of Blood from Final Fantasy VII (by Nobuo Uematsu). Very fitting for when you hear it.

« on: October 27, 2015, 10:42:31 pm »
Going to take s&a's unfortunate experience on board and add it to my list of (many) reasons why I'd never own such games.

I remember as a kid being creeped out by Shadow of the Beast, for Megadrive. There was a place you could fall, where you were trapped. (kind of like the equivalent so S2's infamous Mystic Cave pit). Except, you were trapped because some creepy large pirate ship thing would stop just before it reaches you (which was against a far end wall). It would move, left-to-right forever, (impossible to bypass it) until you let it kill you (upon instant contact).

Silent Hill. I remember being allowed to start a file on that and it scared the shit out of me. It was the dogs that got me though. I really did not like those dogs.

Information Kiosk / Re: Some suggestions and questions regarding charts
« on: October 27, 2015, 10:15:30 pm »
Good topic, interesting read and suggestions. There was a few points mentioned in SADX, that I often wondered about myself.

Though RAing/SAing TP and LW would have been a major MAJOR pain, I never saw any particular reason why they were redacted thinking about it. Sticking to the general respawning rule isn't hard to follow.
LW has just one button end of level, TP does a few buttons around the rooftops (but still wouldn't be hard to keep track of which ones you've pressed).
Keeping to these rules, is no different to making sure SH's bell/CAS's slot machines legitimately.

Regarding SADX boss scores - this was something I often thought about when RAing Perfect Chaos for Sonic life grinding. I can see a lot of easy tied WRs, but a few bosses that can't be done under 1min and Gamma's ones would be interesting.

As for S2....getting 999 rings on slot machines is an insane challenge (as Hyper has proved :P). I get the fact that slot machines on S2 would be S2's only luck related RA (and very few I imagine would put in the work for that) but luck related RA's exist in many other games I see no reason why it should be disallowed for S2.

In terms of glitches....I guess there's the realisation factor of if there's a glitch to gain a better record, that time will stand above all - as Hyper basically put it.
Personally, I dislike many of SADX glitches - since I kinda suck at glitches I guess lol. (I mean, the Tails flight glitch in SH - I couldn't beat my non-glitched time....I'm pretty slow at the Tails CAS glitch, the Sonic CAS glitch, etc). However, I do think these kind of glitches are necessary for competition.

As for TP's/CAS's monitor glitch in TP and CAS, its a cool trick but that's the one I'd like (and think) should be banned. Stopping the timer <1sec in the run is hardly speedrunning. Especially, since you then need to beat the level to count the time anyway. Though I guess Sonic's IC that happens as well, but at least for that you need to speedrun properly until the end of act 2 and the timer is stopped for you. Plus I HATED speedrunning Tail's IC so I never want to see Sonic's IC clip unbanned. Ever.

There are 5 bosses in which have a clear advantage in adv.mode: (Chaos 0, Chaos 2, and all three Chaos 6's). Time difference I believe or just over 4 seconds. (4.2? 4.3?) Thankfully, the rest of the bosses (excluding Perfect Chaos) can still be done on trial mode.

I believe we may already be reached the point you mentioned, where competition in those respective bosses have become past the point of fun....and become hard enough to get a good time. I'm going to take Chaos 2, as an example. This boss has now become to the point where losing frames from the frame perfect time (set by multiple people), very quickly drops you places. To reach "red" on that boss, you have to four-hit him now. I can tell you that my experience of that boss was not fun. My curret PB is 0.07 from the WR, costing me a lot of points and after setting that I took an hour trying to tie the record, or hit the time one frame off it, but ultimately failed. Admittedly, I dislike C2 anyway, but having to do that through adv.mode made this extremely unenjoyable. I wouldn't be surprised if other players found the same.

I think Trial-mode only should have been enforced from the beginning, to have eliminated that issue, but I think it'll be too hard to differentiate those that used it, to those that haven't - at present.  Some players that have used adv.mode haven't necessarily beaten the top trial times, so there isn't a clear differentiation of who has used it and who hasn't (like there is for the monitor glitch).

10
To me, everything you've said in your post F-Man, I couldn't agree with more.

Having done Adv.Mode bosses on adv.mode, it is rather tedious not being able to instant restart. Resetting+arriving to the same spot - especially as Big was annoying as hell. Big is slow and requires the monorail to reach C6, and C6 is mostly an RNG boss which sees most of your attempts over within seconds, so a 2-3min wait per attempts makes this very boring to do. Should this have been trial mode only, this wouldn't be so bad.

As for Casinopolis and Twinkle Park's Monitor DC glitch.....its a cool trick. It really is. But in terms of competition, it absolutely ruins the stage. That is not speedrunning. Once that monitor stops that timer, your merely beating the level, not actually speedrunning it.

It may be too late to enforce a "trial mode" rule. I can see that messing with the charts. But I definetly think a rule should be in place for the DC-monitor glitch, at the very least - as that can't even be called a speedrun. Its destroyed the real top time for 2 of the sonic levels, and this one isn't too late to change. I would be cool with it still running, but under "freestyle".

Information Kiosk / Re: Realistic Suggestion On Moving Forward
« on: May 10, 2015, 09:00:05 pm »
I personally like this.

You still have the standard charts that go by…well the system that’s been in place since the beginning.

This will still work for players that use approved emulators, and for players that may not necessary be able to record (or want) to vid everything. (By want, I’m referring to more casual players that don’t intend on competing seriously enough to hit at least orange-tier but may play more for bit of fun).

Banning the approved emulators, especially when players that once took advantage of the emulator allowance that once existed names still exists on the charts. Isn’t going to make it any fairer. It’ll just piss off members that the ban is there for them, and not for those members. That’s my view on that.

Holding separate charts, takes into account of those above points. Casual players/players more comfortable on emu etc, can still compete on normal charts. However the proven charts are there as a good extension to reward players that refuse to use emulators (despite technically having an option to use approved emulators if they’d wish).  Enforcing video proof (and video proof only) for just the Proven charts is very reasonable. I’ve heard that picture proof can be too easy to fake. (probably depends on which game I guess). Either way, to be on “proven charts” a video is the most reliable option to deserve a spot on these charts. Having rewards as an incentive will force more videos out of people. For competition thats always a good thing.

So yeah. I think It’s that compromise that was needed last year as opposed to different sides arguing against each other. Instead there’s an active suggestion that focuses on both sides. Nice one S&A.

Though this is a minor issue….Whilst sitepoints was mentioned I’ve always thought red Tier should be top 10. Top 5 may have been suitable back in the earlier years…where 5th was easy to compete for…but now it most certainly isn’t. All those names in the top 10 spot, deserve to be red.  “Top 10” is what you look at, when there’s a list with many names. I don’t personally compete to get the highest site points, but I’m just writing this opinion for those that do and look up to those names at the very top. Of course I have no idea how difficult changing colours would be to encode, (as if maybe some it would require changing orange/yellow etc) but I’d assume considerably coding for this is easier than chart calculations but this isn’t priority as of right now. Just a future thought perhaps.....

General Sonic / Re: which special stage do you hate the most?
« on: February 10, 2015, 10:16:49 am »
I don't recall hating any particular special stages, but Sonic 1's special stages can be a little frustrating at times. I never found getting the emeralds all that easy on that as I always put myself in a goal. Hats off to all those that can collect all the rings in them!

Wikkity! / Re: Topic 11 - Have you ever had a WTF moment in-game?
« on: January 01, 2015, 01:14:00 am »
Lots, but one stands out in particular.

5 mins through a "warm-up" session, during Sonic's Twinkle Circuit in 2012, I clipped the final corner by accident. Instead of stopping me instantly, it then lurched me forwards at a speed I hadn't seen before nor seen since, giving me a 1lap time miles ahead of any lap I've done with Sonic.

I never submitted it though. Cool trick it may be, but I hate the idea of defying all my efforts spent on this, just to submit a fluke-based time that's impossible to beat unless one gets lucky.  Despite heavily working on Sonic over time since 2012, I never saw it again. I feel submitting it would be extremely unfair for competition.

Currently no. What UG95 said, if they ever make one that really appeals to me, (like going back to classic-style, or if there was a spin-off from twinkle circuit) I'd love to play those, but realistically I just can't get into the new-genre of Sonic games, and can't see that changing any time soon.

Tie between Sonic and Tails. Both favourite for different reasons.

I got Tails......agreed.

-Also, thumbs up to the easiest question of the quiz "what is your favourite time of day?" Morning, afternoon, evening or NIGHT (though slightly offended "morning" still came up as option for me :P).

Yeah, its good to see some forum activity on TSC, after a fairly quiet spell. (and in my case, actually posting more often, instead of just reading XD)

SADX - Egg Walker - (though it can be a little annoying to TA) this is a fun boss to do casually. It has great music, even has a cool trick where you can manipulate it with a command button. Beating this for the first time this was my favourite boss, as it was easier than Egg Viper, and it was great to see Tails accomplish a "sonic-like" achievement and break-through to be a Hero.

Wikkity! / Re: Topic 9 - How did you become a Sonic fan?
« on: December 31, 2014, 11:46:02 pm »
When I first played Sonic 1. Just loved the gameplay and music. Still remember my first time on Green Hill Zone, and finding act 2 hard, (because of that part with moving platforms with gaps+spikes in between each one). That checkpoint halfway through proved useful at the time. Little did I know that was nothing, compared to Labyrinth act 3.

Must have been '98 or '99 when I first played Sonic 2. I loved that game even more, due to the spindash and Tails. I found it easier, but I couldn't defeat Death egg, at the time. I'd even arrive with 50+ lives, and still fail.

Then, it was Sonic Adventure, and it was awesome to have talking characters, more of them, the storylines, and the unique feeling of playing 3D for first time. Was on a standstill on Big's Twinkle Park though. I remember starting everything again, since I thought I missed a tool you HAD to collect, just to be able to fish.

I remember being given Sonic Advance one Christmas as well. After beating it, I always enjoyed to beat my times on the TA mode, particular over the Christmas holidays.....some time later the same again happened on TSC :P

That pretty much sums how I got into Sonic over-time. S1/S2 remain amongst my favourite games to play casual-the way I've also enjoyed them - which is why I haven't gone competitive in these.

Wikkity! / Re: Topic 8 - Have you ever had a "Christmas Miracle?"
« on: December 31, 2014, 10:38:24 pm »
No. I can't think of anything outstanding enough that's happened on a Christmas before. .....maybe it's the only day of the year I always have (and will) consistently get up whilst its actually still morning.

Wikkity! / Re: Topic 6 - What's your favorite soundtrack from a Sonic game?
« on: December 31, 2014, 10:21:39 pm »
SADX - It doesn't matter (Tony Harnell) has been stuck with me since I first beat Sonic's story-(which at the time, took me a long time to do so....weeks?) When FINALLY beating Egg Viper, and actually hearing the song all the way through instead of just snippets......I just couldn't stop listening to it - even began learning lyrics, so yeah, brings back good memories and the love of that song hasn't left :D

Wikkity! / Re: Do you speedrun non-Sonic games?
« on: December 25, 2014, 12:11:32 am »
There was a time I did a speedrun of Final Fantasy 7 & 8. Only because I wanted an excuse to play the game again with an additional challenge. Since your running on low level, finding alternative ways to defeat bosses etc, made this rather fun XD

Not going to happen. The snowman isn't bringing the snow this year D:

Wikkity! / Re: Topic 3 - What's your CRAZIEST run on TSC?

Sonic's Twinkle Circuit. I was stuck at a low 1:31 for hours on end, before finally subbing it.

Wikkity! / Re: Topic 5 - What's your WORST stat on TSC?
« on: December 22, 2014, 06:46:10 pm »
Here, I'll give one from the 3 games I've competed in:

Sonic Adventure DX – (Excluding Amy's Zero out of this, because Dreamcast). Well, it used to be Tails Icecap - Times, but got lucky that an OoB trick made the level much easier. Answering this now, I'd say Amy's Final Egg - Times. Amy's movements doesn't come to me naturally, and I lose seconds on this stage without having a clue how....and to top everything theres a dumb random door on this stage that ends most runs, so in the end I couldn't be arsed and took the checkpoint.

Sonic Advance – Moon Zoon. Mainly due to the time it took for me to get it, for only a yellow. I really didn’t want a green stat on my times sheet, but this took me well over half an hour >_<

Sonic Advance 2: Though all bosses was a struggle for me, picking one that stands out as particularly bad, wasn't hard. TrueArea53. I can barely beat that fucking thing, let alone being competitive. Unfortunately I've ranked horribly here   http://www.soniccenter.org/rankings/sonic_advance_2/bosses/true_area_53/sonic :(

[Sep'16 edit: Reading back, noticed this was horribly out of date...so fixed it up]

Wikkity! / Re: Topic 4 - What's your favorite competition category?
« on: December 21, 2014, 09:16:52 pm »
I'll pick a separate leadership for each game:

Sonic Advance – Definitely times. (Though lets exclude Moon-zone) Levels here are fun, and you can restart in a flash.

Sonic Advance 2 - Times - This is a very fast game, and keeping boost state was fun.

SADX – Races wins it, with no other leadership coming remotely close.

[Sep'16 edit to keep this up to date]

27
Easily Twinkle Circuit. I took a very long time, with each character to achieve something I consider to be my max.

[Sep'16 edit: Whilst updating old posts, noticed this one needed fixing up]

Wikkity! / Re: Your opinion of TSC
« on: December 19, 2014, 03:59:14 pm »
Well I joined up with the intention of TSC being just something to do for a couple weeks. I planned to compete in just one leadership and be done. Ultimately, that didn’t happen and fully filled out the game- before further improved it at regular intervals. I even competed in a 2nd game. This has been a long “two week quick stop-by” and that’s probably enough to indicate how much I’ve enjoy competing at TSC. Further still, I love checking out new stats, reading posts etc and most importantly the people I’ve been able to interact with, that’s formed up as a result of joining TSC, even actually meeting a member IRL XD

Wikkity! / Re: How you came up with your username!
« on: October 30, 2014, 02:49:55 am »
I’m not the creative, (especially compared to the other stories I’ve read) but I literally based my username on 3 factors that make me different to most.

Dark: (I’m sensitive to bright light), so naturally I love dark environments. (Unless its nearly dark, of very dull outside I have to wear a dark pair of sunglasses/pretty much have my blinds shut during day), so yeah I love pretty much anything dark.

Cold: I hate the heat. My all-time worst weather are hot sunny summer days, (where I resort into spending 15min work-breaks in a dark walk-in freezer).I dislike any temperature above 10C. (50F)….however I love the cold. Winter, being my favourite season - especially when we reach sub-zero temperatures, frosts, snow etc. If I don’t see my breath outside, it’s too hot!

Night: Night = Dark, so I naturally love it when night falls. Nothing beats a 4pm sunset! :D I generally hate daytime, since it’s often warmer and I don’t like being out in the sun. I also operate best during night-time hours. Most of my obtained stats, (especially those that required a lot of work) were also done late at night. (Some were done during the afternoon/early evening….none were done before 2pm, lol).

Since most people seem to love warm weather/summer/long daylight hours etc, and I very much hate that and love the complete opposite, so I decided to make that the basis of my username. (“Cold” sounded bland though, so I thought “Polar” would work better. :P)
