Competition Central / Re: Metropolis 1, 1:11
« on: January 01, 2007, 11:50:11 am »
I'm digging this topic up again, because after a long absence, I've just noticed that both Metropolis 1 1:10 and 1:08 have been achieved since I last visited. How's that happened? 1:10's definitely possible using a perfected version of the same technique me and mike89 used before, but I assumed that 1:08 was reserved for Sonic and Tails together?

Yes, I know it's ages since I last held this record, and I'm not likely to catch up now, but I'm still fond of the stage. So: how'd ya do it, Stanski? :)

Assassin's Creed

Heavently Sword

Sensible Soccer 2006

Right, I've put off asking long enough. I have to give in and ask:

How did you do it, Mike? Just a perfection of the standard strategy, or did you discover some remarkable new trick? You say in your comment for the time that you have a recording of it - fancy uploading that video?

I neeed that one second!

(I also want to update my guide for the level, not only here but I also want to submit it to Speedrun wiki, if they're accepting Sonic games.)

This is the first Sonic with just the big blue guy since 1991's original game,
Except for Sonic CD and Spinball... unless you count the unplayable Amy and Tails.

Oh come on, it's not quite that long. :)

And yes, I'm only nitpicking 1up because there's not really a lot else there to discuss. Sounds encouraging, though. Blue skies please!

I don't have access to it right now - is that speedrun done with Sonic alone, or with Sonic and Tails together?

It's good, but I think the brightness of the background image should be lowered, so that it's a bit more subtle and doesn't clash with the colours in the main foreground design so much.

Yep, 1:15's possible - I know because I got it! :D Not without a lot of torment, though... I used a slightly different strat to the one described above, but I ain't gonna tell you how. :) But even on this record run, not everything was as fast as it could have been, so I only JUST made it. Yay!

And I got 1:14 with Knuckles too - he has the advantage that he can climb, rather than turn screws and hit switches!

Yep, after much torment and rewinding the tape, I've finally got 1:16 on Metropolis 1! Got it on Sonic Jam's "Original" mode, so the level is identical to the Mega Drive version. I've got it videoed, but I have no way of transferring it to the computer. :(

Here's a guide to what I did:

- Spin dash at the start, jump on the slope so you leap over both gas springs. You should have revved more than once, so you should be going faster than normally. Hold right as you enter the spinning tunnel, and hit the switch at around 5 or 6 seconds. (With Knuckles it seems you can stay at top speed for longer - after you leave the spinning tunnel - but not with Sonic it seems.)

- Jump on the gas-piston-spring thing at about 9, jump over the crab, and open the doors smoothly. Watch Yoshifan's video to see how.

- Now, to do the next bit you must get there early enough. You have to fall down the gap between the wall and the moving platform to land in the gap to the right - you DON'T hit the yellow spring - and you need to be there at the right time for the platforms to be in the right place. This is probably the bit I mess up most often.

- Jump over the gap at about 18 seconds (20 if the platforms were in the wrong place), hit the next switch, and as you fall through the opening door, land on the slope to the left and run to the right. Because you hit the slope, again you should be going faster than normally. But slow down at the crushing pistons, and hit the red spring in the ceiling. You should leave the bounching yellow thingamajigs at about 25 seconds (or earlier, if you're lucky).

- Land on the curve with the rings the same way you did before, spin through the spinning tunnel, and keep holding right to get up. Jump and hit the second yellow bumper from the top on the right hand column, and bounce off and hold left until you reach the giant bolt. Run up until you can just about see the top of the next platform at the top of the screen, jump off and land on it. Do the same for the next bolt. (With the second onw, you might be tempted to spin-dash instead of running on it to get up quicker. Don't, because when you jump off, you'll probably just jump right over the switch, losing you loads of time.)

- You shouldn't have too much trouble with getting up to the top. However, don't bother hitting the last switch - just rev up once and spin dash-jump across to the right.

- Jump on the next giant nut and bolt, and without running on it, immediately jump up to the next platform.

- Run across and fall down past the nut, past the spiked squares, and run to the left into the teleporter thing. The time should be about 1:00 now.

- Spin left as you leave the teleporter, and land on the platform that takes you down.

- Rev up a spin dash facing to the right, and as the platform reaches the bottom, release it and jump across over all the spiked platforms, hoping the last one isn't out at the top. Continue to the right and land on the final switch.

- Fall down onto the platform, and wait for the last bit - the EVIL Slicer badnik, the hardest part of the level - to arrive. Stand on the left of the moving platform, and as the roof above vanishes from the screen, start running right. Leap across, and hope you destroy the badnik without it hurting you (trial and error is the only way to know when - I certainly haven't mastered it).

- Finally just run to the right, jumping over the gaps. Spin dashing might be faster here, but it makes it harder to jump over the gaps. I got 1:16, but 1:15 is almost certainly possible, and 1:14 might be too.

Now that I've revealed my strat, I have a feeling my record is going to be very short-lived...  <_<

Best use of the star and crescent. Unfortunately, it depicts something astronomically impossible, namely the eclipse of the moon by a star. But perhaps it's not a star but a nuclear satellite-weapon aimed at India?

General Sonic / What was the first sonic game you owned?
« on: June 23, 2004, 01:32:27 pm »
The first one I played was Sonic 1, on my friend's Mega Drive some time in early 1992. Later I played Sonic 2, Sonic Spinball and the Game Gear version  of Sonic 1. Another friend had Sonic 2 for the Master System, so I got to play that as well.

In December 1993 I got a Master System with Sonic 1 built in, so that was the first I actually owned, and a couple of months later I played Sonic Chaos on another friend's Master System. Christmas 1994 I had MS Sonic 2 and Chaos.

October-ish 1995 I bought that same copy of Sonic 1 that I'd played in 1992 of my friend for £5, ready for me to get my Mega Drive that Christmas (which came with Sonic 2). Some time in 1996 I rented Spinball. Late 1996 I got Sonic 3, early 1997 I got Sonic and Knuckles and Sonic 3D.

Christmas 1998 I got Sonic R with my Saturn. Mid 1999 I got the PC version of Sonic CD. Christmas 2000 I got my Dreamcast with SA. Exactly 3 years ago today I got Sonic Adventure 2 on launch day.

June 2002 I got my N64 so I had to pack away my Mega Drive (not enough room for more than 3 consoles plugged in at once), so I later got Sonic Jam off eBay so I wouldn't have to keep plugging my Mega Drive back in.

So that's my Sonic-game-playing history up to this point!  :P

I'm afraid I don't have anything much to add to the discussion about the technicalities of getting fast times or recording videos, but I have a suggestion for a something that could be an interesting enhancement to the project when it's all done. Why not try contacting some of the creators at http://www.ocremix.org/ and http://www.vgmix.com/ to see if they'd let you include some of their Sonic remixes on the final video, played over the appropriate levels? I think it'd be a fun little embelleshment, unless you'd prefer to have it muted to keep the filesizes down. And maybe you've got enough trouble organising all the other aspects of the project without worrying about differences in musical taste too. :D

Some recommendations:

"Fortress of Glory" (Wing Fortress)
"LightningStar" (Star Light)
"Pokerface" (Casino Night),
"BottledMetro" (a great blend of Metropolis/Hydrocity)
"Deep Damp Sandcastle" (Sandopolis)
"rAAw Battery" (Flying Battery)
"Kevin Lorenzo's Theory of the Death Egg"
"The Outer Space Machine" (Sonic 3 final boss)
"Marble Cake" (Marble Zone)

I'll stop there.

EDIT: Wey hey, I seem to have killed the topic! Yay me! I mean, oops...

Competition Central / 0:06.90 Cannon's Core? How?
« on: May 16, 2004, 09:30:43 am »
I once got a time of 1:30-ish (or something like that... it's been ages since I played) by somehow starting Cannon's Core on Sonic's section. Until I read that (I first saw it a few months ago, I think), I had no idea how I'd done it. It's annoying that it messed up my saved record time, though; I prefer to keep it fully legit where possible, without exploiting bugs. Or "features", if you choose to call them that. :P

Competition Central / Which sonic game did you like on the Genesis
« on: February 05, 2004, 04:59:48 pm »
I can't decide between Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 and Knuckles... I'd say Sonic 2, because its levels are better for time attacking, whereas S3&K's are better for exploration. But all the 16bit (and 8bit!) games do a better job of combining the two gameplay types than the Adventure games ever did (where speed and exploration were divided between the characters).

Also, I prefer Sonic and Knuckles alone to Sonic 3 alone.

Competition Central / Sonic 3Level select - yea or nay?
« on: February 05, 2004, 04:56:11 pm »
Should times for Angel Island Act 2 be submitted using the level select code, or "run on" from Act 1? I ask because using the code means you don't have to do a bit at the start of the level, so you can get a faster time. What about for other levels where your starting position changes depending on whether you use the code or not (I think Hydrocity 2 is another one)?

Also, does it matter if you're using Sonic 3/Sonic and Knuckles alone, or can you use them together? Any major changes between the alone and combined versions?

Well the challenge names are:

20 Rings
3 red Points
50 Rings
Touch Miles
5 Blue Points
7 Secret Cards
3 Balloons

And they're all in minutes, seconds, hundredths of seconds. I think there's another challenge or two I haven't unlocked yet, too.

As for the Time Attack mode, it's basically every level from Sonic 1, 2, 3 and Sonic and Knuckles with some alterations, and again it saves your top 3 times in minutes-seconds-hundredths. You can only play as Sonic in this mode though (it might be Sonic and Tails together, I can't remember). Either way, you can't change your character, so there's no need for any other divisions.

I hope it's added... maybe all those Time Attack records I got then found weren't valid for this site won't go to waste after all! :)

I play on Sonic Jam on the Saturn. Only in original mode, of course (Easy and Normal/Time Attack modes are different to the original levels... they add more rings and platforms and stuff to make it easier, but also unfair when you're competing against people using other versions of the game).

How about adding a Sonic Jam scoreboard to the Saturn section? It could contain records for the time attack challenges you have to do in the Sonic World 3D mode, as well as records for the Time Attack mode in the original games (accurate to 1/100 second). I'll post the info if you like.
