Competition Central / Re: Emulator Proof Thread
« on: February 07, 2015, 01:37:07 pm »
So, I know I haven't been here in 'effin ever... and I haven't played Sonic in all this times, so my skills have probably become even worse than they ever were, lol...

But if I ever (which may not happen) decide to do something here...

1. For S1, S2, S3/SK/S3K: do I understand correctly that .giz files are enough?
2. Will I need a .giz for every single stat, even if it sucks? Or should I keep the forum free of terrible .giz movies, but upload them if somebody requests me to? Which approach is better? Keep in mind, I suck, my stats will suck and my .giz movies will also suck.
3. If I accidentally end up exploiting in-game behavior that isn't reproducible on a console, how can I know? Of course, the likelihood of this is almost zero (Genesis emulators are pretty damn accurate and I suck too much to even dream of such specific glitches), but still. Is "don't care and let the experts decide" a viable option?

Chaos Emeralds / Re: Blue Chaos Emerald Challenge
« on: May 22, 2011, 07:27:40 am »
Well, here's mine. One death on LZ2 because I suck and missed the zip. One death necessary on LZ3. I almost ballsed up on the boss but managed to save my sorry butt with a few well-timed jumps.

Run full of fail, but satisfies the requirements. I really wish I wouldn't screw up that badly on the LZ2 zip, but oh well.

Initials: (yes I know it isn't derived from my nickname, shut up, that's what I want)

If anyone can either pull of a deathless LZ3 or a zipless LZ2 it would be awesome to see. If someone can do both in one recording, even better.

<I liked it when you got hit by that burrowbot and fell backwards onto the switch. Awesome move there :D - FF>

<That was an accident, though a fun one. It's like "AAAAH I'M SCRE-ohwait, no, thanks, burrobot. Also: "TEI"? Did I really type TEI? I meant KEI. -Muzozavr>

EDIT: I forgot. REV01 ROM. And let me pray it doesn't desync because Realtek HD's microphone boost makes the sound emulation... effed up, basically. I fear it turns on PAL sound in NTSC mode making it all screwed-up and low-pitched. Let's hope that doesn't desync the movie.

EDIT 2: I have to also say it's funnily appropriate for a calmness challenge that my effed-up sound makes the drowning song sound absolutely demonic and relentless. (as if it wasn't...)

Unless I missed out on something, this looks new... any idea whether it can save you time?

Competition Central / Re: Yet ANOTHER glitch to BAN for S3K
« on: October 19, 2009, 05:37:00 am »
To do the glitch:

1) Have two files, one with S+T all chaos emeralds present but inactive because of one super emerald.
2) Have second file with Knuckles, on the level you want to abuse.
3) Knuckles gets to a bonus ring, does check time reset (either by time over or just death, I can't remember) and soft resets the game.
4) On the first file, go to Hidden Palace.
5) Fly Sonic up and get the lightning shield.
6) Right before Knuckles, scroll the screen up, then fly Sonic there with Tails. To beat Knuckles without touching the ground or being super, jump when Tails is touching Knuckles's sprite. Do this 8 times. It's kinda difficult, but possible.
7) This breaks the Robotnik cutscene. Wait a little while, until Robotnik steals one of the super emeralds (yes)
8) Now hop on the super emerald.... and find yourself in the special stage.
9) Get the emerald or not, you will respawn at the bonus ring that Knuckles touched before soft resetting.

If you do it WITHOUT the "second file" trick it respawns you at an underwater, empty, glitched Angel Island, then when you fall and die it starts over from the intro cutscene.

Competition Central / Re: Yet ANOTHER glitch to BAN for S3K

Knuckles finds a check as close to a far-off bonus ring as possible. Knuckles dies from time over to reset time (IIRC you need a time over but maybe I'm wrong and any death suffices)

Knuckles takes bonus ring. Soft reset.

Do glitch, get faster time. Profit.

Plus, this can be (theoretically) used to get into impossible places for ring/score attacks.

werster, "current run" clause. You can use savestates for the glitch at the end of Lava Reef 1. You can use human-controlled Tails for this glitch. In fact, you could even use debug and as long as it's not in the same level that you're running it'd be by the current rules "fair and square" though it's surely more impressive when done like this, with NO debug whatsoever.

Competition Central / Yet ANOTHER glitch to BAN for S3K
« on: October 19, 2009, 12:18:37 am »
HOLY SHIT. ORKAL has done it once more.

Basically, this glitch allows you to start the level from a bonus ring.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CyqcmNxn2OA

The scary thing is, it's entirely debug-less and Super-form-less. (You will need emeralds for this, but you never actually turn Super/Hyper)

Apparently it does. Changing the country fixes the slowdown/graphical errors.

honestly if it is even questionable whether something fits under a current rule it's better to make a new one. the rules are meant to be clear and easy to understand. it's not like the rules page is horribly difficult to update or has some sort of space limitation.

To Thorn:
First of all, I'm not trying to make this glitch allowable. I'm just trying to make sure that no one tries to fit it under OLD rules because that would be illogical. And if there's no logic, you can't reliably follow the rules and being sure you didn't break any by accident.

"from one zone has never affected the other"
Do Sonic Adventure powerups count? Sure, everyone already has every single one of them, but strictly speaking, you get a powerup in one zone and carry the ability over to the next.

About Lava Reef 2 and Death Egg 2:
The boss areas take the TIME from the PREVIOUS "zone". (program-wise I mean)

If you use a Super/Hyper form in the non-boss area, it INVALIDATES said time, because without using the super/hyper form it'd be a different time.

In this case, you enter a different zone and the timer starts anew. That NEW time cannot be invalidated unless you turn super again. REGARDLESS of whether Super/Hyper forms were used in activating the glitch, the new time will be exactly the same. The only thing that directly influences that time is the slowdown advantage.

Super/Hyper clause doesn't work.

What seems really interesting is that everyone tries to ban it using the current rules, which don't work. Why not just make a new rule against that glitch? Wouldn't that be so much easier?

Brian_pso's rule seems good to me.

If you want it banned that's fine. But the rules should be well written, and for that we should define what fits under the current rules and what requires new ones. This requires a new rule.

Otherwise, someone unfamiliar with this topic could later go, check the rules, test the glitch, and figure "ain't no rule" and abuse it. Since currently there ain't no rule, but there SHOULD be one.

Competition Central / Re: S3K -- ORKAL DISCOVERS NO-CHEAT SLOW MOTION GLITCH
« on: September 22, 2009, 10:12:26 am »
I didn't say it shouldn't be banned. I said that if you want to ban it, it should be banned properly by making a new rule instead of coming up with illogical whatevers to shoehorn it under the old ones. The old rules are not enough for this glitch, just make a new one.

Freestyle, probably not. The purpose of S3K 1P freestyle is to show off the power of Super/Hyper forms, and it's more interesting to see them compared on the same game speed. Just ban it altogether, then. :P

Cruizer, it's not a fallacy, modifying the game involves changing the code/programming, level design, etc. Something that can be done on an original copy of the game that has not been modified is in no way any sort of modification. This glitch should not be allowed but claiming that it should be disallowed on the grounds that it's a modification is dumb, because it's not.

QFT.

EDIT:
Quote
but don't code changes physically change the memory
Stuff like Gameshark and such DO change the memory, but that's covered by the "cheat devices" clause.
ROM hacks on the other hand physically change the ROM itself.

Competition Central / Re: S3K -- ORKAL DISCOVERS NO-CHEAT SLOW MOTION GLITCH
« on: September 22, 2009, 10:02:00 am »
Let me say this: it's a difference between changing the game itself or changing the STATE of the game. The game's code doesn't change -- every single byte in the ROM is the same. The state definitely changes -- this glitch messes up a truckload of variables in memory.

What about this clause:
"If the game crashes and resets itself, you must do a proper hard reset before playing".

P.S. Turns out hard reset is actually important. Soft resetting won't get rid of it.

Competition Central / Re: S3K -- ORKAL DISCOVERS NO-CHEAT SLOW MOTION GLITCH
« on: September 22, 2009, 09:43:06 am »
Performing a glitch that makes it run in PAL technically means it has been modified. Sure it may be in game, but definitions are definitions. >_>

"Modification" means the game itself has been changed, and NOTHING changes. A modification would be if a certain combination of events would cause the game to actually modify it's own code. (yes, that can happen in some shoddily programmed games)

Banning a glitch? Fine. Being illogical? For what reason if you can just make a new rule anyway?

Competition Central / Re: S3K -- ORKAL DISCOVERS NO-CHEAT SLOW MOTION GLITCH
« on: September 22, 2009, 09:02:40 am »
If you want to ban it, then please make a separate rule or something, because the current general clauses don't fit. The "altered version" does NOT apply: the glitch merely ACTIVATES the PAL mode on a NTSC system.

Or make a general clause that says "slowdown in general is not allowed, unless explicitly stated otherwise". Whatever, but PLEASE don't try to shoehorn it in the current definitions. It isn't logical.

Competition Central / Re: S3K -- ORKAL DISCOVERS NO-CHEAT SLOW MOTION GLITCH

Apparently no it doesn't fit. I'm not sure but AFAIK the glitch works on the real hardware, as long as it's an american console.

Competition Central / Re: S3K -- ORKAL DISCOVERS NO-CHEAT SLOW MOTION GLITCH
« on: September 22, 2009, 12:54:11 am »
Though there are still some other glitches and mess-ups after this, ORKAL updated the video annotations cause he figured out why the slow motion happens.

Basically, the game... is trying to run in PAL mode. With the country set to America. If you switch the country to European in the emulator, slo-mo and the graphics errors go away.

Competition Central / Re: S3K -- ORKAL DISCOVERS NO-CHEAT SLOW MOTION GLITCH

BUT you can also play as regular characters in the same mode. Watch again, he starts a normal game from a save on Hydrocity and it has the same effect.

HOWEVER (!) this is not without it's problems. According to ORKAL on Sonic Retro himself:

First, if you do the glitch wrong, the game will hard reset. Yeah.
Second, if you try to use level select and then enter Lava Reef again, the game will also hard reset.

This is the only time "non-hacked no debug" hard resets for S3K were ever witnessed, all others were soft resets.

Also, sprites may flicker as seen in the video.

Either ban it or approve it and make TAS-like untouchable stats without actual TAS. Can you imagine all the player's skill put into a slo-mo version of the game?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1atT6qrRLY

This is a video of several different Lava Reef 1 glitches, but the last of them "The Megaglitch" resets the game, and creates a weird mode when some sprites flicker horribly, music plays stupidly fast, and the game plays stupidly slow, including the timer.

The video says "lags" but I am pretty sure it's more similar to a slow-motion thing, it looks EVEN. Not jerky, like lag, but even like slo-mo.

Seriously, this is... Wow.

Zeupar, no, I'm not related to andy. In fact I don't even have a clue who he/she is.

Also... I realise you're still waiting for THAT proof, but the MH2 vid is right here, and you yourself explicitly said "could help your case as well". Right now you seem to imply that it will not change anything. So, which one is true? Can't be both, cause they contradict each other. Please explain.

1) Since he proved MH2, that stat, at least that stat, should be there. End of. It's the current WR and people use TSC as a source of Sonic WRs quite often, and 645 is no longer the WR. It could easily misinform others.

2) Magnezone, you're missing the point. In your defense, I was FAR more angry than neccessary. In my defense, Luxray was just as harsh to andy with even lesser reasons. I can understand why people take long to post a vid, and he even told it in advance, yet Luxray STILL decided to keep the harshness. In short -- he had no excuse to be that mean to andy. I also had no excuse to be that angry to Luxray.

And in my next message, I could say the exact same thing with ten times less "harsh" and you would have no reasons to exaggerate that.

3) You fail at reading. Reread Zeupar's posts, he says at the end "that could help your case as well". It clearly indicates that Zeupar is willing to at least consider an unban if the video appears (which it did).

In short: Magnezone, if you want to poke fun at me, poke it well. Then you'll succeed.

I mean that Night Knuckles (unlike Luxray) was very polite yet I replied to him in the way as I did to Luxray. The genreal message was right, but in an uncontrollable rageous fury, I replied to Night Knuckles in a WAY angrier and harsher tone than he deserved. I'm sorry.

Luxray OTOH fully deserves it for the "post it or be banned" remark. So consider the more "rageous" parts to be directed at Luxray, and everything will be fine. ;)

Also, this doesn't seem maxed, I can't put my finger on where it is exactly, as I haven't played this game for far too long, but andy120195, I think you missed a few rings somewhere. AND STILL PREVAILED, which means this strat is awesome.

P.S. Just found out your stat says "645", one ring less than your actual stat. Fix that, you know you want to. You know you want the better stat anyway, cause it's all legit. :D

Sorry, I actually didn't mean to write an angry post like this, it's just that I was angry on Luxray's uber-harsh "post it or be banned" remark and replied to him the same way, then when you asked a similar question, I was still angry and replied too angrily.

I didn't mean to do that, wait, at the time I did, but I was totally rage-blind, OK?

HE WASN'T AT HOME AND HAD NO ACCESS TO THE VIDEO. REREAD HIS POSTS AND SHUT UP ABOUT "SPLITTING" ALREADY.

He could've split them before going away, but for a non tech-savvy person splitting is more difficult than you'd think. So he simply didn't really have time to learn. Rapidshare was his host of choice, one of three suggested. Rapidshare and Mediafire were suggested very close to his "I left home" date, and possibly he didn't find out until he was out.

He tried using Megaupload before he left home... and apparently it glitched out on him, the same way Rapidshare glitches out on me. (For me on Rapidshare, the "Browse" button isn't there, even though I know where it SHOULD be due to screenshots. Read the manual, toyed with Java and Javascript options, different browsers, whatever, it just doesn't work)

Or maybe something else happened, whatever. He posted the video and we should just watch it and judge based on the video, OK? That will just make everyone happier.

Downloading the video right now, that should be interesting stuff.

Luxray, you're a complete and utter FAIL, he wasn't at home, which probably means he didn't HAVE the video with him until he returned, and couldn't be arsed to do it again in a different location. Very understandable, and he is actually one day earlier than 2 weeks, meaning your "post or be banned" remark was ABSOLUTELY uncalled for. (OK, I'm also a FAIL for not checking the original "I need 2 weeks" request's date and instead relying on the "there's still 1 week remaining" post that's one day late)
