Rules Revisions / Re: S3&K special stage inclusion?
« on: February 15, 2007, 07:16:43 pm »
I´m against it too.
Most of the stages are really trivial to get a perfect bonus in, with few exceptions (#4 or #5 of S&K, the one where you run on blue spheres all the time).
Stanski: I plan on competing in the S2 specials soon, but i don´t know if i can be bothered to go for top scores (meaning those that would challenge yours ^^).

Competition Central / Lava Reef 1 Glitch?
« on: January 20, 2007, 11:08:02 pm »
Ok, so i want to improve my Lava Reef 1 times with Sonic as well as Tails.
My 2:34 with Sonic was possible through the use of a glitch that i can´t seem to replicate, except in like 1 out of 80 tries... not very satisfactory :-)
Today, while trying RPG´s red key challenge i had it happen again and recorded it, as seen in the attached .giz.
It´s pretty much at the start of the level, about 20 seconds in.
Can anyone give me a hint on how to reproduce this?

Leaderboard Disputes / Re: I call BS on Nelspike TX
« on: January 13, 2007, 12:57:11 am »
Well, that is a good question, and i am sure that i am not capable of answering it.
I started speedrunning only a couple of month ago while others here have been at it for years, but i can send the recording of my run to one of the S3-experienced admins to judge this.
Of course, a better way to resolve this issue would be if Nelspike supplied some kind of proof for his stats.

Woah, my 2-day-old record surpassed by 8 seconds.
I had actually planned to write a guide on that LB1 2:30.
If this record is real i can as well scratch that idea.

First things first: I really like the name "The Sonic Center", it´s only flaw (that i can see) is that it does not tell that this site is mainly about playing the game, and playing it on a high level.
So what about "The Sonic Competition Center", or just "Sonic Competition Center"?
Advantages:
- Its more specific, it says "Okay, we´re here to play Sonic games, not to read fan fiction or talk about the comics".
- It´s got the word "Sonic" in it, which many of the other suggestions don´t, making clear what it´s all about. Also this increases the chance that someone might get here over google or something.
- It´s pretty close to the original name.
- It´s not already used by another site. There is already a Sonic-related site called "The Green Hill Zone".
- I don´t know any disadvantageous abbreviation for TSCC, unlike with STD :-)
- It´s not bound to a specific 2D or 3D Sonic game.
Disadvantages
- It´s longer than the original name.
- It´s different from the original name, which might confuse people. Obviously this is a flaw of a name change in itself.
These are all i can think of right now, there might be some more negative things to it but i can´t see them at the moment. Also, reading the topic again i realized that i just re-stated lots of the things already said by Ring Rush. Too lazy to edit them out. :-)
Also, out of the suggestions i also like Sonic Elites the most, except that it sounds... well, elitist :-)
Disclaimer (At the end, yeah ^^)
English is not my native language, so if you find any grammar errors in this post you may keep them and sell them on ebay ... or point them out to me to help me improve my english.

This was beautiful!
I have one suggestion tough:
At about 0:35 Tails bounces through the screen.
I´d say either leave him out of the game completely or perform some awesome stunts with him too :-)

Another variation on the "collect few/no rings"-theme:
Start the second act of a zone of your choice in S3&K with a lightning shield.
Do not lose the shield or change to another shield.
Finish the act with under X rings.

Yes, thats what i assumed too.
I wanted to say that there are still situations where you are still stuck, but then i could think only of one (Killing a boss and then "accidentally" jumping over the pillbox, which should not really happen ^^), so i guess thats ok.

Well, that looked interesting, and the HC1 boss looked hard :-)
It would also be pretty frustrating as there might be many situations where you have only one try and no chance to suicide to re-attempt the level.
Another idea, mainly inspired by Master Blue:
Finish a S1/S2/S3/S%K (your choice) in 5 minutes. You gain an additional 5 (10?) seconds for each monitor you opened. This would force players to play fast but they can´t take the standard routes.
There are also many variations of this theme, like giving different time bonuses for different monitors (e.g. extra life = 30 seconds, ring box = 0 seconds, etc.).

I´m not too sure about the left to right thing, the 3 monitors in AI1 can be unveiled from right to left, but the IC1 ones worked from left to right.

An addition to my last question:
Would it be allowed to:
a) Unveil ring monitors with the flag at the end of act 1 and have the rings count towards the ring total?
b) Unveil ring monitors with the flag at the end of act 1 and open them at the start of act 2, to raise my ring total for act 2?

« on: November 13, 2006, 12:00:09 pm »
I kind of assumed that all this was common sense, when i started competing here (S3&K) 2-3 weeks ago i started by recording all my level records in .giz format before submitting them, assuming that this is what everyone does. Apparently not :-)
I guess no mercy for cheaters and liars is a good policy in that case

Wow, i never thought that would be possible, thats 99% of Sonic 3... now onwards to S&K?:-)
Other possible (far easier) challenges:
- Collect all rings in the glowing spheres bonus stage
- Collect a certain amount of items in glowing spheres, or the gumball machine stage
- Collect X rings in the slot machine stage
- Something with Sonic 1 and 2 special stages?
Just some brainstorming here :-)

Good to know, that means i´ll have to make some savestates with lightning shields :-)
Edit: I just came upon another question in that vein:
For Ring attacking, would it be allowed to carry over rings from the previous act by unveiling ring monitors with the flag and opening them at the start of act 2? I guess not, but i better ask :-)

Now that sounds challenging!
I´d categorize it as light blue, because it´s a handicap.
Did you do those levels without even turning around?

Ah, didn´t think about that, well, in that case it sounds kind of interesting (although it would look rather awkward, not graceful ^^).
I guess things you could land on would be all "objects", as you said, monitors, moving platforms, stuff like the rocks and switches in Sandopolis, spikes (rather unhealthy). Basically everything that is a sprite instead of the map itself

Hm... i guess that would be impossible because he gets tired after some seconds of flight and you need to land.
Maybe if walking would be forbidden, so that you can land and have to take off again to make progress.
