General Sonic / Re: Sonic 1 TAS improvement sneak peak

Very nice find on labyrinth 1. I remember trying to help JXQ find a viable zip in that level for ages on the last TAS he made of Sonic 1.
This really should have occured to me to test when I noticed that you can use the scrap brain conveyor belts to get into the wall the same way (but not anywhere useful).

A referee who can arbitrate the rules, probably with people with knowledge of the games behind him

What.
A rules enforcer and probably also a rules committee.

A community manager who can keep people together harmoniously
A site designer / director / all-around-visionary who can tie everyone together
I do not understand the difference between these two.

Explanation plz?

For a straight person to be called the most sexual is just plain wrong...
Sexual orientation is completely uncorrelated to a person being sexually minded.
"most sexual" refers to the latter, not the former, and of all the people on the forum Alondite seems to be the most likely to be thinking about sex at any given time. Your arguement makes no logical sense.

Competition Central / Re: ITT we reconsider two games for competition
« on: December 21, 2008, 10:43:21 pm »
Was anything ever decided for SEGA Superstars Tennis and MSOG?
They're both Sonic games as far as I'm (and other people are) concerned.
...
Don't pull the whole "not competitive enough" route since that is so not true for MSOG.
Great idea, let's add Sonic Spinball, too! And hey, while we're at it we should compete in Crusader of Centy and Phantasy Star 4, since Sonic shows up in cameos in both of those!

Well, Funimation was notorious for the kind of changes 4kids makes, up until 4kids came along
What would be changed?
Let's take a case study: Dragonball Z was dubbed by funimation
VAs
okay Funimation does have in-house dub-actors now. Previously they subcontracted the voice acting to other studios, which I believe is how 4kids does it. But, you couldn't ask for worse dub actor treatment than Dragonball Z got, with the entire voice cast being replaced no less than three times during the series.

less dubbing the stupid death and destruction stuff that makes it look bad
Because surely, funimation would never do something stupid like replacing "kill" with "send to another dimension"

original music inserts left in, original themes and endings.
Bad techno inserts, rock the dragon, and not a moment left silent, because funimation was too lazy to negotiate for rights to the original score for the series.

So, something I noticed watching the official trailer video... Well, people have already commented that the level designs look similar to 3D versions of Sonic Rush, but it didn't strike me until now that the gameplay does also.

Fuzzerd, how was this time achieved? I'm quite sure that the TAS strategy isn't possible in real time, if there is a new trick here, it might be useful in other ways...

It's not worth staying in any place that dislikes you just because you've been somewhere else. I'd suggest you leave the other place -- the place that is putting ridiculous constraints on what parts of the internet you can or can't use.

Right, I'm in, I'd actually like to create the game, though, because I think I'm the only one here who has a good handle on customizing the rules on warfish.

Speaking of maximizing our potential for gaming, egg, it's your turn in two games right now.

Also, genus and I resolved stuff in IRC, we were both overreacting to some stuff, genus being overly defensive, and I being overly hasty -- judging based on one game, when he wasn't doing anything like that in the other 2 he's in.

Gaming and Grazing / Re: The warfish.net (Risk by web) thread.

Err, it's not play by email. It's play by web. The only email bit is notifying you when you're invited to a game, or it's your turn in a game you're already playing.
When it is your turn, you go to warfish.net, click play, and click the game it's your turn in. Then you conduct your turn by clicking on the map, and selecting numbers from a drop-down menu. First phase is deployment (click one of your countries, select how many troops to deploy, repeat until no troops are left in reserve, click done). Second phase is attack (click one of your countries, click an adjacent country that isn't yours, select how many to attack with, repeat as strategy and luck necessitate, click done). You get one free troop transfer during the attack phase, so when you take a country you can add troops from the country you attacked from. Then there's the transfer phase, where you can conduct a limited number of troop transfers (click a country you own, click a country you own next to it, select how many armies to transfer).
To trade in cards for troops, click on the "cards" tab, put check marks under the cards you wish to trade in, and then click trade.

Right, you play by getting invited to a game.
It looks like someone who none of us know actually got to you first, so in order for me to invite you to a game, I'll need you to login and go to settings->account, and check "Allow others to invite you to games using just your profile id". Then click save.
... or PM me with the email address you used to sign up.

Well, the wikipedia article on risk (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Risk_%28game%29) has a good rundown of the game rules, and some basic strategies for it. One thing to note, though, is that on warfish I'll generally be using randomized starting territories for my games.

Okay, so I know we've got a bunch of strategy gamers on here. And most of you have got to have heard of, if not played, Risk. Warfish.net is a lot like Risk, only you don't have to sit down at a table and roll dice for hours in order to play it. Also there is a variety of custom game boards from subscribing members that are available to use.
To start, go to http://warfish.net/networks/TSC_Upthorn, and give it your email. It will send me an email telling me you're trying to join up, and need to be invited to a game. After your first game, you can set up new games, invite new people, set up your own recruitment page, etc..
First games with me are probably going to be on either the default map or the World War 2 map. After we've got more people signed up, I'll try to get a game going on a huge map like Texas.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with risk, the wikipedia article has a good rundown of the rules and basic strategies.

EDIT: Important notice!
If you sign up using this link here, after you've been invited to your first game you will have to select "allow others to invite me using only my profile id" in the account subsection of the settings tab, in order for other players to be able to invite you to other games that they may start up in the future.

Upth: what's your thinking behind Sakurai not choosing an arena from Sega consoles? Those are certainly the most memorable. I'm willing to bet Sakurai throws out Nintendo-exclusivity in favor of significance.
The bottom line is that Sakurai works for Nintendo. The only possible reason they could have for including Sonic is to promote that Sonic is on Nintendo now.
As opposed to promoting, say, the days when Sonic was giving Nintendo a run for its money.

Surely you can understand my thinking.

I sincerely doubt that the stage will be from a game that was released while Sega still made consoles.
If it's going to be from a 2D game at all, it'll be from the Advance series. But I'm guessing it'll be from Sonic Heroes or Sonic and the Secret rings.
If we're Lucky we'll get something from SA:DX instead...
So my bet is on Seaside Hill (likely) or Windy Valley(lucky)

Green Hill would be awesome, though.

Right, 2 points here:

I'm in California for work from 10th September for 3 weeks.  If anyone wants to meet me, I'll buy them a drink :)

UK meet: I've organised stuffs like this before, so I can do it no problemo.  It'd have to be October or later, and it'd have to be in London, but I can find us a location and get accommodation for travellers.  Anyone interested?

LA area Cali, or San Francisco area Cali?

Right, I'm in.
Also this is, like, the eight time in the past 2 days that I've opened up the TSC page to post this precise.

So err, Sonic825 appearantly has no idea what the "modify" button does
and thinks that quote + four sentences is "incredibly long, despite having written a longer post simply to Complain about the length of Marth's posts.

Marth-for the first few months you were here, I thought F-Man had changed his nick and gotten more boring.
I'm like F-Man??? (Okay, you just paid him a big compliment. :P
(Just kidding. I hope no one thought I'd seriously say something like that.))
So... if you're posting this in the criticism thread, does that mean that being like F-Man is a bad thing?
Or does it mean that F-Man's excitingness is the only thing that stops you from saying negative things about him?

how very very lol.

...I'm trying to figure where Sonic CD fits in, both in gameplay and music...

Gameplay:
S3K > Sonic CD > Sonic 2 > Sonic > Knuckles Chaotix

Music
Sonic CD > S3K > Knuckles Chaotix > Sonic 2 > Sonic

We have known for a long time the screen size would have taken a hit. (which is why I lost interest in the game) I don't see how this commotion is justified.
You missed the point.

It's almost definitely going to be sped up to normal for the final release. I just don't see it being released as it is.

Bomberman Act Zero is a GOOD GAME. There is literally nothing wrong with it.

Quote from: eggFL
Rockman X6 was horrible. (Rockman X7 would have worked as well) Although it wasn't so much that the final stages were basically impossible in certain forms, so much that you couldn't quit a level without getting a game over. (and since game over had no penalty, extra lives were a liability) And there's also the laughable enemy spriting.

I'd also suggest (for later designs) completely remove all instances of requiring a glitch to pass through.
You've missed the point.
To summarize: Any gameplay element in the original game, including those caused by programming errors, that can be made important should be made important. As a result, if we don't have levels that require glitching to get through, there's not going to be a whole lot of material for level designs.

This hack is modeled after a hack of Super Mario Brothers called AIR.
Let me paste the relevant portions of a list of AIR's defining aspects:
  • Very unforgiving. Intuition will not work. Mistakes are not allowed. Most paths are one-way.
  • In order to complete the game, the player is required to collect some mushrooms, only to lose them soon thereafter.
  • In order to complete the game, the player is required to abuse many of the glitches of the game (such as passing through walls in a multitude of different ways).
  • There are only a few people in the world who have completed this game. Savestates are invaluable.
