Emulator Proof Thread
« on: April 01, 2014, 11:30:24 pm »
From now on, stats performed on an emulator are required to have proof attached to them, in the form of an emulator movie file. This thread exists to make the process a bit easier. Simply make a post here, with whatever files you need attached to your post, then link it in your stat comment. If you'd rather upload it somewhere else, that's fine too; this thread is just one option.

Reminder of the rules regarding emulators:

- If you do anything on the emulator that can't be replicated on console, your stat is void. This includes emulator functions like save states and frame advance, but it also includes in-game behavior that can't be replicated on console.
- If you/your emulator can't consistently run the game at full speed (usually 60 FPS) without frame drops, your stat is void.

Remember that you can attach multiple files to one post, so please do that where possible using the modify button to cut down on spam a little. Also, please say in your post what game/stat the movie is for and what emulator you used to achieve it.

Hopefully in the future we can have a system more nicely integrated into the site, but for now this is what we've got.

IMO you should have devoted a whole subforum to this. Would make searching via the forums easier (i.e. making the topic = name of stage(s) being submitted.)

That way you can search post titles by level name and user and get exactly 1 result.

Would that apply to any emulator? That's because I use Kega Fusion for my S1 submission, and this emulator doesn't have recording (so it also doesn't have TASing) support.

I'm pretty sure i can record from my Fusion364 with the Kega Fusion video codec. I've done it before, but I haven't gotten a stat with it so i haven't submitted any stats or videos from that one. Under the Video > Log AVI file option.

So an example of what to do would look something like
Sonic1 green hill zone times 25sec
emulator: gens_11a
rom: Sonic The Hedgehog (W) (REV 01) [!]
GMV file
is this enough proof or do I need a hand cam as well.
I also assume you want to try to upload as many submissoin proof files as you can all at once not just one like this example.
Edit: green hill 2 times 14sec added
green hill 3 times 34sec added
      marble 2 times 11sec added

That's fine, and if you use the modify button then you can keep adding gmvs to the post, rather than double posting, :)

Got some small improvements.  Both of these were achieved in Gens+.

GAME: Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (W) [!]
  • Times (Sonic): Aquatic Ruin 1: 26s
  • Times (Sonic): Casino Night 2: 1m35s

Just to clear this up, is what you are wanting, that the priority is an input file, if the emulator supports it, and then if input file isn't a function of true emulator, we then have to submit a video of the stat?

Marble Garden 2 Knuckles, 1:23. This was also submitted to the videos section despite only being orange rank due to no better video existing for Knuckles. I'm aware that we're saying YouTube videos don't provide proof of anything, but the idea here is that I have the Fusion-encoded AVI to back it up, so if somebody wants more proof, I can show beyond a doubt that I used a non-TASable emulator (Kega Fusion) and didn't use savestates.

Same as Thorn, I'll upload the videos to my youtube channel but I'll keep my AVIs for further proof if needed. I mostly record in 30 minute bursts so I rather do this, then having to upload the whole thing to an upload site. Any video with 2013 in the title was done on bluestacks.

Sonic 1 (2013) Green Hill 1 Tails 0:18
Sonic 2 (2013) Hill Top 1 Knuckles 306 Rings
Sonic 1 (2013) Green Hill 1 Sonic 20''41
Sonic 1 (2013) Green Hill 1 Knuckles 0:18
Sonic 2 (2013) Hidden Palace Sonic 402 Rings
Sonic 2 (2013) Mystic Cave 1 Sonic 263 Rings

I will eventually change the links to screenshots to videos when they are uploaded, which will be very soon. Video for Green Hill 1 Knuckles is up now.

What is this "Bluestacks..." Have I been living under a rock? That is an amazing emulator, after having looked that up!

I am officially mindblown.

EDIT: Mindblow again. Apparently it's not an emulator, well I guess it is but its more than that. I don't even know what the heck one would call that.

Yeah it's pretty neat to use. It's only main function is to find apps, download and play them. You can't TAS on it and it has no savestate or recording function. So I use Bandicam to screen capture it.

TRIPLE KILL

Here is my proof for Angel Island 2 - Sonic - Rings: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wl4ePJG5avk

I did consider using the level select to get to act 2 but that would have been convenient and as far as I am aware all things convenient on emulators are now banned, so I had to record the whole game from the beginning again which was pretty lame. Anyone that wants to record, like, Sandopolis is in for a whale of a time!

Terminal Velocity act 1 super sonic 2:03:36

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OtLt4VPrvD8
did this for fun and also hopes this eases tension.

(this part is serious though)
got this time via emulator all I can tell you about this stat is I got 2:03:36 about 7 times, and was never able to go any lower. (not that its not possible)

CURRENT THREAT LEVEL: mildly-low

report to the princess:
I will mention that while I was never able to obtain this time on a console, yet I got/ keep getting this time fairly easy on emulator. I still think the threat level is low considering I was never able to go lower then 2:03:36 on emulator. Until someone can beat this I think the threat should be maintained at mildly-low

its also hard to say if I ever broke this rule due to the nature of the level:
Any game running on a PC or emulator must perform at full speed while playing the game you're submitting for (60 FPS in most cases). The exception is if lag is caused by the game, rather than by bad hardware or emulation.

What do you need to do to achieve that time? I've tried many many times, yet I can't seem to shave off the precious dew centiseconds, any tips or tricks that ensure the time you got

in detail supersonic / boost asap (obviously). try to do low jumps over trip plates (not sure if that help tho) after the 5th trip plate dont jump over the 6th and right before you land in part 2 boost u have to play with this. do nothing until part 3 and dont do anything until around EDIT: (Had the wrong time up)1:23:50 ~1:24:00 ( this is the main part you have to play with) and boost during this time (and not before that time). keep in mind ive never done this on console

So, I know I haven't been here in 'effin ever... and I haven't played Sonic in all this times, so my skills have probably become even worse than they ever were, lol...

But if I ever (which may not happen) decide to do something here...

1. For S1, S2, S3/SK/S3K: do I understand correctly that .giz files are enough?
2. Will I need a .giz for every single stat, even if it sucks? Or should I keep the forum free of terrible .giz movies, but upload them if somebody requests me to? Which approach is better? Keep in mind, I suck, my stats will suck and my .giz movies will also suck.
3. If I accidentally end up exploiting in-game behavior that isn't reproducible on a console, how can I know? Of course, the likelihood of this is almost zero (Genesis emulators are pretty damn accurate and I suck too much to even dream of such specific glitches), but still. Is "don't care and let the experts decide" a viable option?
Proud to discover a new glitch on Sandopolis 1 as Tails

Hello Parax, I have a few questions regarding emulation rules:

So a lot of emulators tend to hover between 59 and 60 fps, staying at 60 80-90% of the time. How picky are you with this? Are you mostly looking for intentional lag?

Also, in terms of staying at 60 fps, what about areas of the game that lag badly in the original games?... (I'm thinking about section of Metropolis). Thanks!
