1) Beat the game as Sonic (and Tails if you wish): 4
2) Beat the game as Tails: 4
3) Beat the game as Knuckles: 2

and for anyone who is crazy:

4) Beat the game as Sonic (and Tails) with all emeralds: 1
5) Beat the game as Tails with all emeralds: 1
6) Beat the game as Knuckles with all emeralds
