You want to take the luck out of it?  Just bring enough lives with you.

What about the luck-based problems such as not getting the right shield in a S&K bonus stage?

I dont really think they are that much of luck, because when I recently did some, it seemed way easier once I knew where most of the locations were and where to look for the emeralds.

You should've made this a poll instead of a topic.

Well, with SA, if you know the locations of the 3 emeralds, and then restart, they will be in the same location, making it skill you need, not luck. And with other games/levels where luck seems to be a factor, it really is not. For example, from SA, Sonic's casinopolis may seem to hinge on the luck of pinball, but in reality the way to get a fast time is much less random (collect the dumpster rings). To apply this to the Carnival Night level with the drum (I forget the act) from Sonic 3, it is not based on luck when the drum reaches the point where you can exit-it depends on the timing of your jumps. Take also the Egg-Go-Round from Sonic Advance 2, where you need to keep your character in equalibrium with Eggman (for a short period, anyway) to get more hits. Luck? No. You need to meticulously time when to jump, and determine which direction to move in order to stay on top of Eggman-only slightly luck. Luck is really only the dominating a factor in a few select levels. And on a different point, some levels are really a combination of luck and skill. The luck/skill factor is really just 1 blended element, with skill being the more necessary. So, in short, no.

Wrong Adventure game.  SA1 you choose 3 (out of 12) as you load the level and those three are unchanged until the level is reloaded.

SA2 you choose 3 out of the 60 (1 from each group of 20) at the start of each life, and they do change.

I say no. I like the luck records...

I say yes, I don't like the luck missions. I remember getting 40 secs in Wild Canyon in SA2, the emeralds were all over the place. First I had to go up the wind pillar and glide to it, then next i had to destroy an enemy on the lower floor and then go back up to dig in the ground. I am a very unlucky person so I say yes, seperate them.
Chaos Emeralds: Yellow, Red, Green, Blue and Purple.
Keys: Light Blue.

The answer is simply DON'T PLAY emerald locations that are as far away as that.  If it's too far away, just use up 1 life and restart.
