Any talk of smash bros is banned in #soniccenter. Period. And because I know there will be complaints at great length about it, I will explain the reasoning again for the umpteenth time.

There were a few individuals who were going to avoid chat in order to avoid spoilers. No, I won't say who they were, It really shouldn't matter who they were; making a point of that would result in either people talking about spoilers "when they're not looking" (however you judge that) or badgering them into relenting and getting the policy undone.

Are secrets in a fighting game trivial? Perhaps. I personally don't understand why anyone cares. But the fact remains that there are those who do, and honoring their desires is such an incredibly simple thing to do but obviously fairly important to them that I find it almost morally offensive that people cannot be bothered to do so.

The general friendliness of the community has taken a huge dive over the past few years, to the point where I can't go into a "hiya folks" topic anymore without seeing people sniping at each other over the most stupid irrelevant stuff. Here I am drawing the line.

For those who aren't swayed by appeals to their human decency, if you insist upon talking about SSBB secrets and can't muster the effort to respect the wishes of your compatriots to the extent of typing /join #smashspoilers, then you will be banned until further notice. Even if you think you're cleverly "avoiding" spoiling the game, because you are not clever and you are not avoiding spoiling.

Any further complaints, comments, etc should be directed to this topic, as I have discussed this far too many times in chat and will not do so again.

Magnum, some people may not even know that due to purposely avoiding the dojo.  I know someone doing that, but dunno about here.  Either way, it's safest to take ALL Brawl talk to smashspoilers.

There aren't that many instances of things like this.  Here, the biggest hype comes from characters, and some people don't want to know the unlockables.  Heck, the unlockables here is like... spoiling the story of the other games.  Especially since SSBB doesn't have story.  SSE aside, that is.

Recall that this same policy was instituted when Harry Potter 7 came out. Because people cared about Harry Potter spoilers.

Also those games were simply examples, the first few big name titles that sprung to mind midpost. I am quite sure that you cant argue that major plot spoilers in any of those games is less impacting than a roster of characters that spoils the stories of the two prequels that the majority of SSBB potential buyers have probably played to death.

I find that notion entirely ludicrous to the point that words almost fail me on a counterpoint. No game is on such a pedestal that it deserves epic special treatment over everything else. Except for Fantastic World Dizzy on the Commodore 64, of course~

Multiple people cared about, lets say, Mass Effect, yet there was no channelban on spoilers for that, Id list multiple other examples but its 4AM and my capacity is hindered. Also you may notice I only listed upcoming anticipated games. Not -every- game as you are stating.

What Rolken is implicitly saying is that someone specifically asked him to curb spoilertalk. People haven't cared enough to get that for other games, and therefore it wasn't. The roster is sufficiently different from the other two games, and with characters surprising enough that its content is not predictable. But even if it wasn't, you're still spoiling the game for them by deconfirming the strange characters they thought would be in the game.

As for major plot details in other games not being as taboo, regardless of experiences you've had wherein critical plot happenings have been revealed, people have the sense and sufficient empathy not to drop a bomb on twists in game, but here there's a grey area because some people will gobble up all the info they can while others don't want to know a lick. That you don't understand why proves that the gap justifies the ban.

At any rate, like I said earlier: if there's a game you care about enough that you'd hate to have it spoiled then just drop a line with Rolken. It is -that- simple, Smash is only a special case because people wanted it to be a special case.
