Suggestion: TASvideos-style encoders
« on: December 03, 2007, 01:31:29 am »
So basically having people encode their own videos is well and good. Except when the vids look like crap and are far too big. Or on Youtube.

Having a few specific encoders (at least, for the older games where you can pass around giz files or equivalents at leisure) would ensure a consistent standard of video quality. I know MK has already volunteered to do this but it probably doesn't make sense without at least three.

So in this topic you can nominate to be an encoder or discuss the video standards. I personally am a fan of SDA's LQ standard - 30fps 192kbps Xvid (or x264) in an AVI container - but that's subject to change.

Thoughts?

I've been asking people to delete my huge Heroes videos, I don't think anyone has. Nowadays, my speedrun videos are usually less than 5 mb

I would go for: x264 for video, AAC (192 kbps, so we can hear the rings' fx without imploding) for audio, and mp4 as container.
Fail collection: 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5.

Well, I had a go at this encoding thing myself. The following were the results for a 111-second video:

avi, XviD: 3257 KB
mp4, x264: 2646 KB, and noticably better quality

Is that kind of size difference (maybe 1/6) and quality enough to make mp4 the standard? Bear in mind that not everybody's got VLC.

In the meantime, I have to fix up the issue my computer has with recording sound. :/

Mp4ever. Mp4 is the future![/ad]

And there are lots of known programs that don't have problems with mp4's, not only VLC.
Fail collection: 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5.

"Not having VLC" is no excuse anyway. It's fucking free and requires like no setup.

VLC's delay on pausing and such annoys me... but this is irrelevant.
The moon is so red. Looks like it's going to be a fun night.
