New kid with a probably stupid question

I'll be joining here as soon as I can get my submissions respectable, but I've got a question I can't seem to figure out - what defines "freestyle" on SA2B? I can't seem to figure it out, and I'm sorry if it's obvious.

Long story short, in Cannon's Core you can enter as any character (through a glitch, preferably as Sonic), and you can restart a level with speed shoes (from another glitch). You can't do these outside of freestyle.
