I call for a contest!
« on: June 16, 2006, 07:08:16 pm »
Since (for most of us anyway) summer break has most likely recently started, I propose that we have a little contest to occupy us now that school's done. I will also be taking part so we'll need 2-3 people to act as judges. Note: There is no prize, this contest is solely for fun.
-Basic Contest Concept: Create some concept ideas for an original Sonic game.
-Rules: 1. The concept must be a spin-off. (Makes the contest more challenging.)
2. The concepts must be submitted in a Microsoft Word format (or similar type of program) document.
3. Content must only warrent an E or E10 rating.
4. The deadline is August 1st.
-Scoring (Early ideas, judges can add more and create weights out of 100 points later if they desire): 1. Potential for being awesome: Does this concept have potential for an excellent game.
2. Boldness: Does the gameplay ideas dare to take the basic Sonic gameplay skeleton in brave new directions?
3. Interference: Does the gameplay ideas stray too far from classic Sonic roots. (Higher interference reduces the score.)
Ever know what its like to get pwned by a book? Sonic certainly does.

I'll be a judge if you like. I have lots of free time on my hands this summer, so expect me to do a good job.

I propose a 3D Sonic game with decent gameplay and working camera, that'd be original *shot, stabbed, beaten, etc*
This topic has now been officially won by me.  Never mind, you might do better next time!

btw what counts as a spinoff game? You should define it for the contest. Does the game count if it stars someone besides Sonic, or does it actually have to be a genre besides action/platforming.

Also are images allowed in the Word file?

Definition: A game that stars someone besides Sonic. He can be a playable character, just not the main star. Also, there are no restrictions on it being 2D or 3D. In regards to images, as long as they aren't offensive (general common sense thing) they can be used. in fact, they make it easier to people to understand the concept.

So how will the judges be picked? Can I just be one, or will there be a process I need to go through?

Judges: Psyborg. I need two more, preferably experienced Sonic players.
Players: Me, RPG, and egg. I've already begun to write down my concept. It's entering its 5th page right now but may get up to 7 pages long by the time I'm done.

so it wouldn't be considered a spinoff if Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles were the only 3 playable characters in the game then? You'd have to play as all 3 though to beat this game, you couldn't just play with sonic like in the regular genesis games.

If that doesn't count as a spinoff...then I guess I'm going to need a new story / character to go along with it....

All you need for a spinoff is for Sonic to not be the main star. For my entry, Sonic and 4 other characters are playable and all 5 stories need to be finished to get to the Last story.
My contest entry is ready. It has been revised a little to add in some new idea I though was cool. Summary: A fusion of the gameplay of Sonic Rush with the gameplay of the Mega Man franchise. (Mostly the combat.) In regards to a visual view of the concept, I've decided to take it a step further. http://media.ds.ign.com/media/794/794195/vids_1.html Posted here is a link to actual gameplay footage of Mega Man ZX (the latest game in the franchise, coming out 9/12. I pre-ordered it last May) so the judges can get a good picture of what's being fused with Rush gameplay. (Some of the later Mega Man games are capable of moving at a surprisingly fast pace in the hands of someone who knows what they're doing.) The first 2 videos are from a hands on look at an early version of the Japanese version. (Not being played to its max speed potential.) The third video is of a cut scene that is surprisingly good for a DS game. The 4th one is the E3 footage and in the last half, shows just how fast the game is capable of moving at.
-Edit: I have seen images of what the traditional shell might look like. It may look like a souped up SNES controller with twin analog sticks. Any mention of remote based movement for flight are scrapped and replaced with analog movement.

yo

Here's my submission. Yep, another Amy game.

It's under 160kb but still too big for here. How about some megaupload?

I'm much later than I imagined (this is harder than I imagined). I done tons of writing for one but then changed my mind on the game and am about half way through this one. Thank goodness that there is no acting in the judging
